By "art," he means tailoring workouts to an individual's character and running style as opposed to applying strict physiological principles for all. So, letting the "locomotive" runners go out and run 10 miles over hill and dale while having the "finesse" runners do faster repeats on flat ground, for example. A strictly scientific coach would have EVERYONE do a long tempo run, or EVERYONE do VO2max intervals, etc. To some degree, everyone "believes" in certain workouts for themselves. Even if it doesn't make a lot of physiological sense (10k runners doing 30-40s, for example), it is a great aid to your training simply because you BELIEVE it makes you better. And genuine belief is just about as good as physiological fact in this sport.

definitely needs to be a connection on an individual basis with your athletes. although it is difficult you have to coach the individual to some degree

man..i was about almost dehydrated until I watched this. Thank you JACK! for that awesome draannk!! i like the artsy side of coaching more then the science. Nothing is more satisfying then motivating someone, earning someones trust, and even tricking someone to run and believe in themselves. :P

All good points. Plus science is based on data collected from a large number of human subjects. So, working with one individual, the next individual, and the next, requires a good coach who is in tune with what is going on with each unique individual. Daniels is the man..
