Well I some what agree on people having a different abilities but there is also a saying which say " If talent doesn't work hard, hard work will win the talent" and therefore we might have someone who has the ability and the talent but he doesn't want to be an athlete or he doesn't want to work hard VS someone who doesn't have much ability but he is committed and works hard and is motivated, who is going to win? Obviously it will be longer for the second guy to get where he wants to be but it is possible!

Yeah, Gymnast v Shaq, bring them down to the track, im not so sure Shaq is winning. I know it has nothing to do with his point.

Love the JD segments
I think he said something about throwing the shot, not racing, I'm sure a gymnast would beat shaq in running...but that would be funny to see!

I've definitely had my experiences with coaching doing more harm than good. Once I read this man's book and put his training principles to use I ran a faster pace for a half marathon than I ever ran for a cross country race half the distance under one coach. I love that he's featured on here. I think Jack Daniel's does a fantastic job at what he does because he explains the principals behind his decisions. Very little of what he does is dogmatic.

Hey Jack,
I need some direction. You said if someone asked you to coach them for a marathon you would. I have been coaching myself, but need some direction to improve. Would you work with a guy whos ran 3:53-1500,14:18-5k,30:15-10k. Or else know of coachs that would help me gets faster. Im from So Cal.

this is exactly the case for this boy on my old highschool team where he was a heavy kid and was motivated to be a sprinter and he just was not a sprinter because of his body type. you just had to tell him hey if your are anything your a thrower.

RE: Opportunity: His point is right on.
This is the biggest reason why a medal on the track is more impressive than a medal in the pool (or certainly equestrian as he points out)
A gold medal means you beat everyone in the world with the OPPORTUNITY to compete in that event.
For track medals this means you are beating BILLIONS,
In the pool, Millions
In equestrian, Thousands.

This is only one of the reasons that I think comparison of Phelps and Bolt are skewed. The other is that on the track we ONLY have "freestyle" events. In swimming they give out 4 golds for each distance.

Amen to the negative coach, that skrews up young runners. I agree with the statement that some people will just be more prone to things than others, it's so obvious!

These videos are an absolute gift to the running community. Sure, we can read his book. But this man has a vast knowledge of the sport and of life and to get his ideas and his voice into video form is almost invaluable. I learned more in an hour long lecture given by Arthur Lydiard than I did from reading his writings. I'm not saying this will be the case with Mr Daniels - considering how much I learned from "Running Formula" - but the videos let us hear it from the source!
