- See Less - Not everyone can say they’re the second fastest woman in American history.
The Northern native sprinkles her speech with a distinctly Midwestern accent when she speaks honestly and earnestly about her collegiate struggles with eating problems. Upon sustaining multiple injuries and surmounting her eating problem, Goucher graduated from the University of Colorado in 2001, leaving a legacy of becoming the NCAA Outdoor Champion in the 3000m and 5000m, the NCAA Cross Country Champion and a 5000m Olympic Finalist, placing eighth.
Her mighty comeback continued as she finished second in the 5K at the USATF Outdoor Championships in 2006. She set personal records on the international level and ran the World “A” Standard in the 1500m, 5000m and 1000m. Her third place finish in the 3000m at the 2006 IAFF World Cup and her 10k time ranks her the second fastest American woman of all time.
Goucher continued setting records as she reigned over the Great North Run with a time of 1:06.57, a record that earned her the title of the fastest woman’s half-marathoner of the year and set a new American best time.
The record-setting, obstacle-dominating success story moved to Oregon with her husband – American runner Adam Goucher – and continues to be coached by Alberto Salazar.

Say what? Here's logic was RIGHT fellas. He picked her 3rd and that's what she was. Tyler, he was right, man up dude!!!
AC 14 said: She's got 7 women with pr's faster than her? Yeah, she MIGHT win. Really going out on a limb there Anonymous Coward aren't you? Give me a break!
a lot can happen in 26.2 miles. She may win she may not...that is why we race!

Kara is lovely! AND She is a very strong competitor!! She can make it!! She ran NY beautifully!! And It was her debut!!
It’s dumb to state otherwise!! I am not saying she WILL win! All I’m saying is that she MAY win!! She’s fit and has the talent to do so!! I’m rooting for her anyway!!

obviously I have hit a nerve, which was not my intention and I apologize for that. I was replying to a comment made be Thad 29, he made a comment that she would not run under 2:23 and prob. not win. So It got me thinking I wonder what the winning times for Boston have been. So I checked and saw that it's possible for a woman to win without running 2:23. As far as Her setting a wr. I don't recall ever making a comment about that, but when you brought it up I stated that because she has the fastest debut marathon for an American and Deena Kastor has run under 2:20 that it is at least possible that she can eventually (not at Boston) run under 2:20.
Yes I am a runner, and I am running Boston this year.
Your post was a complete waste of time Tyler. Dream you say, how about reality.
My post "CLEARLY" pointed out it's relativeness to Joan Benoit and what she did at Boston versus Kara and her upcoming race. For you to not be able to see the relevance in my words is embarrassing at best. Joan broke 2:23 and never broke 2:20 in her career. She broke 2:23 at Boston, am I losing you? If Kara can't eventually run 2:20:43 at Boston (were still on Boston Tyler) where Okayo ran her best, then how is she going to approach Radcliffe's record of 2:15? By dreaming?
Also, what does your comment have to do with who in God's great name ran this or that time in the last 5 years, AT BOSTON! Are you comparing Kara to others? You really proved nothing and we'll see if you post on April 20th. Do you actually believe what you're saying? WOW!!! You have my pity Tyler. You needed Luis to point out that we were talking about Boston? Didn't the video help you out a bit?
You said, "for those who are quick to say she can't"........Can't what? You were responding to someone who said she won't break 2:23, NOT if she would win or not. Do you actually run, or just post on boards?
This is to "Say What? Here's Logic" I don't think and I was not saying that Kara will be the best Marathoner in the world in her second marathon. We are talking about running Boston. (Thanks Luis for pointing that out) So I am sorry you wasted your time typing up all of that information that Was irrelavent to our Conversation about Boston) but since you brought it up... Correct me if I am wrong but Kara has the fastest debut marathon by an american right? Considering Deena has now run under 2:20 it is at least possible that before Kara's career is over she could dip under 2:20 and be considered one of the best marathoners of all time. (if you never dream of great things you will never achieve great things)
The point of my orignal post is that she has a great chance to win Boston. a few people stated that she can't win in Boston because she cant run under 2:23. So I was merely stating that you don't have to go under 2:23 to win Boston. Thats it!
You'll have to do some reading Tyler. How fast did Kara say she can run there and why does it matter how many times it has been broken in the last 5 years?
Let me break it down for you.
Kara's goal is to be the best in the world and eventually approach/go after Paula Radcliffe's best time of 2:15. I'm not doing your homework for you, it's her words, I read them. The women's course record in Boston is by Okayo with a time of 2:20:43 in 2002. Guess what, that's her pr! She's never run faster and her time in Boston is not considered her pr because of the drop in elevation from the start to the finish. Yet she ran 2:22:31 in New York. How did she run almost 2 minutes faster in Boston?
Joan Benoit ran 2:22:43 in the 1983 Boston Marathon. I was there Tyler, I didn't look it up. She finished with an all-time personal best of 2:21 plus at Chicago.
So then, if she says she can run "a lot" faster in her next marathon, how do you define a lot faster? I believe Alberto even gave a time, but that's for you to research, not me.
My point is if Joan Benoit never broke 2:21 and ran 2:22:43 at Boston, how is Kara going to approach Paula's time if she can't even match Joan's? Does that make sense?
What does the number of women who have broken 2:24 in the past have anything to do with what Kara is doing this year on April 20th? Absolutely nothing. How many women have run 2:15 before Radcliffe? None!
Kara just slipped under 2:26 at New York and lost it in the later stages. With average temperature on an average feeling day, she's got to run as fast or very close to Joan's time in 1983 or how is she going to break 2:20 in the future let alone approach Radcliffe's world record. If this doesn't explain it for you, I sincerely don't know what else to say.
Tyler said: I don't know what this talk about 2:23 is?!?!?! in the last 5 years there has only been one year (I think it was 05) that any women ran under 2:24 the rest have been 2:25 and above and we all know she has already ran 2:25. For those of you who are quick to say she can't... Nothing great was ever accomplished without a dream!
You mean in Boston, don’t you?! Anyway… The winner’s finishing time has been under 02:25:00 in two occasions in the last 5 years:

So beautiful is she! So fast and strong and yet so delicate! She runs very naturally and joyfully. I am definitely rooting for her! I think she’s got the passion and strength to do it!!
It is nice to know that you guys are on top of things and don't allow implied profanity with a * on your site. Please don't let this turn into letsrun.com.
People have the right to their opinions and it should be fine to disagree with others. I am in the camp that doesn't believe Kara will win Boston, but that's my opinion. It's nothing personal against her, I just truly don't believe she'll win. It's no different than those who think she will, it's just an opinion (who really knows?).
Deleting posts for not agreeing with someone is just censorship and wrong. But when they have to swear to do it, it should be promptly removed. Thanks again! My little girl can now continue to read comments and look at videos.
I agree with B22, she's not going to win and is definitely being hyped a bit too much for her ability. I guess it's just where technology is taking us. Everyone is taped and loaded up for all to see. She's good, but I honestly would not put $$$ on her to win or run below 2:23. Just one lads opinion.
Wow, you really need to get your own identity b.crew. & kelley. You want to see her run because you think she's going to win or because you like her looks? I think we all know the answer to that question.
Would you or did you ever take a trip "just to see" Mrs. Kastor run, who's won a bronze medal by the way (you know that don't ya?).
Face it, you like her looks and are trying to be just like her. Hint from a 22 year old male who's girlfriend is way better looking; she's not that hot. Find yourself and stop trying to be someone who your not.
For Bro.................you said she's the most beautiful women on the planet. I think you meant woman, and no she's not but obviously you've got the right to your own opinion.
J. Kirchner.....................it's good to hope, but she's not going to win.
I'll be in Boston, but to run, not to follow Kara around. b.crew, since you won't be there, you can live vicariously through me. Will that help ya?
She's as arrogant as they come and would rather sign autographs than watch her husband run in the OT finals. Sad, very sad.
I like her perspective and sense of humor about the whole thing. I'm looking forward to seeing how she does in the race. And thanks Flotrack for the cool coverage. Nice music too.
Your SOOOOO Tired Mark when they finish.....Its pretty funny I think....Sounds like your a bit out of shape breathing into the camera....start training for the marathon and qualify for the trials....You and Ryan
I really do like that song though..and that's rare for me..You know, I remember the only other background song that I especially liked from your videos (there all OK) was that bluegrass song during the Dellinger Invite..2007? or was it 2006? I dunno..
Where do you hear music like that and is it rock? Jazz?
I dunno, i'm a Townes Van Zandt fan.
Good luck to Kara too..always an excellent interview..
Hey, can you guys find Lopez Lomong?
Maybe you can use TVZ's "Lungs" in a video someday...it'd be a stretch but sort of fit in theme wise.
Kara Goucher long run on Feb 8th, the day after she won the 3k at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, on the Boston Marathon Course. Kara does the last 20 miles of the course with Matt Taylor (Chasing Traditions, Kimbia and Glory and now with Puma). Alberto Salazar drives along side of the two as they prepare for the 2009 Boston Marathon.
