you don't have to have a good VO2 to be a good runner, but many good runners tend to have good VO2's. i would agree that the anaerobic onset and lactic acid buffering/clearance ability would tell you more about running capability than this test.

CoacnB, I have also conducted many of those tests. You've never seen anyone drool as much as pulling that thing out of their mouths...hahahaha so gross! And taking BP during the latter stages of a VO2max test is awful. I have also been the subject in about 6 or 7 of them. I once tested at 81 mg O2/kg/min. However, I was no where near the runner that Olinger is. Which proves, the important parts of these tests is NOT the VO2 number that comes up, it is the calculation of % VO2max that corresponds to onset of lactate, the % of VO2max that can be maintained for a sustained period (a lot of which is determined by lactate accumulation), and probably more importantly than all the Velocity that you are running at VO2max, the velocity at onset of lactate accumulation, and the velocity that you can maintain for a given period of time.

I performed over 60 of those tests for my masters thesis. I've taken a couple myself. They are never fun. Running with that tube in your mouth is horrible. At least the harness for the tube looks better than what we used to use.

Duarte - not a re-run...first video like this was pre-altitude visit.

Cool video...would be interesting to see if any changes occur in the near future.

Wow. That's a pretty damn high VO2 max, even for a pro. He's right though, numbers in the lab don't mean anything on their own. It's the times in practice and especially races that matter and indicate fitness. Hopefully the lab times will translate into some good PRs.

The first time I attempted to watch it, an error message appeared. I refreshed the page, and it works fine. Not sure what that means for you guys, but regardless, great couple of videos. I love how you guys touch base on all things running, rather than limiting your coverage to just racing. Thanks so much.

VO2 Max Test with Chapman & Olinger

Robert Gary, coach of Brian Olinger, Dan Huling and The Ohio State University contacted Team Indiana Elite coach Robert Chapman. His athletes were going to try altitude training for the first time and he wanted to measure the benefits. Before the guys left for their month long training stint in the Park City, Utah area they stopped in Bloomington to meet with Chapman. They took part in tests such as running economy, VO2 Max and lactate threshold. Upon returning to Columbus, they went back down to Chapman to see how their bodies responded to the altitude. We were on hand to see some of the findings. This is the day after Olinger's return from altitude.
