I know that some attention has been drawn to the Illinois history between Chris Derrick and Evan Jager, and certainly attention has been ongoing between German Fernandez and Chris Derrick, but as far as the top 4 in that race, there is yet another point in history that is of note...

Evan Jager was a heavy favorite in the Midwest Region for Footlocker XC in 2006, let alone for the national race. He went out and led the race for the first 2 miles, however, at that point he apparently looked pretty out of it. Hassan took over and won the race, and Evan ended up getting 11th (i.e. the first place not to go to the national meet).

I remember being extremely disappointed by the circumstances and thinking, "This Hassan guy robbed that race. He was just lucky that Evan had an off day." Now, I see that Hassan is the real deal. Of course, Evan is too. It's so awesome to see all of these histories come together in one race.

He went to Emerald Ridge, as some other dude stated below... got 10th as a soph at state XC. Went to my school, is like a legend.

I loved the fact that Hassan gave kudos to Mark for running across Minneapolis before 8 AM to find Hassan and to get this interview!! I wonder how many zigzags Mark invented on that adventure.....Thanks.....and the interview was really good too. Got to know Hassan alot more.

Perhaps the best distance runner most people have never heard of, he in fact moved to MN to start his junior year at Minneapolis South.

this guys is the man. and its great because you lose vaughn who's the only guy who broke 13:30 before ncaas last year. you wonder who would step it up when those guys leave (vaughn, pifer, curtis). now we have forrest, mead, chelanga, rupp, derrick, fernandez, bethke, mcneill.....at 13:31 and under! and 5 more under 13:40 (24 guys total under 13:50!!!) the 5k is going to be sick
