Actually derek thomas used to run the 400m his junior year, never ran any distance. Then his senior yr he was persuaded to run cross country, went from 17min 5k's to 15min 5k's, then in track he ran distance for the first time and started to kickass in the 1600m and 800m but decided to pursue the 800m at state and ran 1:51 his first track season as a distance runner. Now hes a 3:43 1500m runner his freshmen yr. FYI his splits are crazy, look how he finished this race if you pay attention he was far behind and finished in 2nd.
