- See Less - After a few standout performaces as an underclassmen in high school, German came to prominence in his senior year when he broke Marc Davis' course record by 14 seconds at the 2007 CIF Cross Country State meet. He then won the Foot Locker West Regional and placed third at the finals. A few months later he won US Junior Nationals in Corss Country and earned a trip to the World XC Champs where he lead Team USA with a 25th place finish. At the end of 2009, German was named to the ESPN Rise All-Decade Team as one of the best 7 HS XC runners from 2000-2009. In track, he really turned heads with two amazing performances. At the CIF State Meet, German ran 4:00.29 to break Ryan Hall's meet record and then came back 3 hours later to win the 3,200m in a blistering 8:34.23. This is widely considered the best HS distance double of all time. A few weeks later he broke Jeff Nelson's HS Two Mile record at the Nike Outdoor Championships, winning in 8:34.40. He also borke Galen Rupp's 3,000m HSR running an en-route 7:59.82.
As a freshman at Oklahoma State, German won the Big 12 Cross Country title, but a mid-race injury left him a disappointing DNF. He came back strong in indoor track by breaking the World Indoor Junior mile record twice, with 3:55.02 being his fastest. That time is also an NCAA record. He skipped the NCAA Championships to focus on the World Cross Country Championships after he defended his US Junior Cross Country title. At Junior Worlds, he lead Team USA with an 11th place finish. During outdoor track, German won his first NCAA title, winning the 1,500m in 3:39.00. At the USA Championships, German broke Chris Derrick's weeks old US Junior 5,000m record when he placed 5th in the nation with a 13:25.46. He was a finalist for the first ever Bowerman Award for his stellar freshman year on the track.
During his sophomore season, German struggled with injury, but still helped his team win Big 12, Mid-West Regional, and NCAA National team titles.

ForTrack...you couldn't be more wrong!...I love the "fist pumping" attitude by the announcers!
Guys...don't change a thing!..This guy is not smartest guy in the room (he things is)!
These announcers certainly wouldn't identify worthwhile athletes, or anything they hadn't been spoon-fed in advance. They're constantly, nay incessantly, preoccupied with "oohs," "ahhs," and other onomatopoetic drivel. It's annoying to hear them (if only for the inconstant yelping), uninformative (even misleading) while listening/watching, and somewhat demeaning to those they comment upon (or omit). Ultimately, I'm thankful they manage to provide video (as they voluminously do), but they could stand to hire ANYONE else to handle the commentary. They are completely LOST when it comes to race awareness, never mind analysis.
Hassan Mead is way too underrated. Those commentators didn't even say anything about him until he took the lead even though he was with the lead pack the whole way.
thanks to all of the flotrack fans who appreciate and celebrate the efforts of these young men. Sub 13:30 as "Juniors"! Virgin didn't do that. Pre didn't do that. Shorter didn't do that. El Gerrouj didn't do that. Jerry Lindgren may have done that, but I don't have his stats. The new kids are awesome.
who is this Me guy? Coe always does the arm thing...he shakes his arms a few times to get relaxed...hes done it all his life...state champ...cif champ..national champ...he dnf'd cuz someone fell on his ankle.....its a shame too cuz he woulds won the race ..he look so smooth...he has the running form/technique ive ever seen....
I find it amazing that Hassan Mead gets so little respect in not only this race, but throughout his career. Hassan made a powerful move with 600 meters left and all the commentators could talk about were Derrick and Fernandez. Even when he was finishing (WINNING) the announcers still focused on Derrick and his time and proceeded to talk only about Derrick and Fernandez after the race. Props to them both for beating Rupp's record but a race is still a race and bottomline is Hassan Mead won with the third fastest time in the country this season. Go Hassan (one of the most down to earth and humble runners I have ever met) !
In the video at about 7 to 8 lap mark you can see Coe dropping his arms, he does it a few times. That shows signs of the Big Bad Bear about to jump on your back. That is why he DNF'D.
Love these guys. German and Chris both are gutsy, determined and fearless! Neither waits for somebody else to make the race for them. Both are willing to move to the front and push the pace. Going to have some epic battles over their careers. Should be a lot of fun to watch!
I think buttsniffer is a douchbag. He's probably from Louisiana or something and reeks of tobasco sauce. Oldsloguy seems like a very wise man. You don't have to be so hateful you sniffer of butts.
I can't wait to see more future duels like this. It's so amazing watching that much young talent all in a pack with 400m to go. They all ran fantastically. Thanks Flotrack!
I almost got fired from my job watching this video at work. Apparently cheering at your computer is frowned upon in the work place!!! Mead, Jager, CD, Fernandez awesome race guys. props to Kosgei for going sub 13:50 after a spill, and way to flex some nuts Crouch.
C'mon guys! (or are some of you ladies?) Flocasts are what we live for. Otherwise we wouldn't be blathering all over their blogs.
Hassan looks like a deer. German's time (or should we say, "Fernandez"?) was fantastic. Derrick's even better. Jager? Isn't he some old guy trying to resurrect his career? Doh! forgive me, he must be at least a few hours past his own "junior" status. I wonder if he has a future in this sport...
Oregon is even better than Villanova was in the 70's.
Thanks to Dan, who knew it's important for us to get a glimpse of the Derrick v Jager history.
JUST BE QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great race hats of to hassan.. but fernandez will get that record at nationals but still fair play to derrick gutsy race.. the best performance in that race still has to be by kosgei having a nasty fall and still able to finish will an incredibly fast time considering
I agree so much w/ JaredR. Where would we be without Flotrack? I often wish Mark and Ryan et al would just disable the Comments, 'cause so many of them are posted by smack-talking wankers; they don't contribute to a substantive discussion of the races or the sport.
I guess everyone has a right here to criticize but... you shouldn't be bashing. This website provides the best coverage of distance running of any site on the internet, and it's done with more passion and enthusiasm than any site. Mark Flo and the guys work their asses off to get awesome coverage to the large contingent of fans on the net that desperately want it. They're providing this because they know there are so many people that want it! They give it to us for free, out of their passion for the sport. Who cares about the little confusions and info. delays during the race commentating. Floreani makes this stuff a blast for thousands and thousands of fans out there, he makes it fun. I think it's the greatest think to happen to track on the internet since Dyestat got big in the late 90's.
That's my dawg.. lol I was tryin to tell you folks last year that my boy Hassy was gonna do work on folks. You guys thought i was playin.. ya u got Derrick, Fernandez and all these cute names.. HASSAN MEAD is the truth and he's the most down to earth guy you might ever meet. The kid used to herd goats in the Somalian foothills.. he didn't even start running till his jr. year of high school. My man is only a Soph. an he's runnin like a champ!! Proud of you Hassy!
Yeah we were really focused on German vs Derrick that we def did not give the correct props to Mead. He ran an awesome race and is a good guy. Sorry Mead.
poopie said: it really is simple math. its also kind of annoying listening to you seriously figure out that 65s is 13:32.5 5k pace. I think I listened to you bros spend about 5 minutes figuring that one out with each other. Lay off the keg stands.
Well if it was so easy for you to figure out then you could just tune them out and save yourself the "anguish."
There wasn't just one race at this meet. Plus, we're all watching for free! Why do so many people feel this sense of entitlement?

65s = 13:32.5
64s = 13:20 exactly

Too bad that Coe twisted his ankle when Kosgei fell in front of him with 9 laps to go.
The ignorance here is simply astounding. None of the commentators called the winner, because it was Hassan Mead. Not Derrick/ German/ any of the other names thrown out there.
You're right.
Coe looked like he was hardly working at all.
Just biding his time as they went thru 2-miles in 8:43
Shame he got twisted up over Kosgei!
Hope he's ok.
watch coe when he hits kosgei . . that looks really really really painful. coe is really good and I think probably would have won this race had that no happened.
i heard that when kosgei fell coe may have stepped on him and twisted his ankle. he tried to hang in as long as he could but sounded like it was pretty painful.
Anyone notice Ryan Vail yell something at German when he started to fall off the leaders? What a stand-up guy to use some energy to get his frosh teammate going! Great race by Vail as well!
Hassan mead is the next big American super star, watch for him in the next few years. I think the reason why all you guys are blinded and are not seen that he won this race is because he is not a born american, but to all you haters out there, I got one thing to say " HASSAN MEAD WILL BE TEN TIME BETTER THAN CHRIS AND GERMAN. BELIEVE IT.
Guys remember these athletes are trying to "Peak" around Nationals and or USATF Summer races, to hopefully hit up Worlds if possible. I think some of them are still young enought to be considered Juniors?
Word. Mead has been putting up solid results for years. I understand that German wasn't at the top of his game yesterday, but Mead ran a great race nonetheless.
Anyone notice that the guy rabbiting, Ton Kloos, was the guy who took that nasty nasty fall in the steeple a couple weeks back and had that big gash in his leg? That's a tough SOB there.
after watching the first 2 laps of the race, I see where German lost it. He shouldn't have been at or near the front until the halfway mark. still a great race. huge german fan. and originally being from illinois, props to cris derrick.
Michael Carter said: Chris derrick had to hurdle a guy and he still beat german
You have to remember that german had a stress reaction about a month ago and has also taken about a month off. Plus this is his first 5k on the track. All of this leads me to the conclusion that he was about 70%. At 95% German may go sub 13:15.
Guys...don't change a thing!..This guy is not smartest guy in the room (he things is)!
Great race!
Unless he drops his mile pr 3 more seconds I think he should give the 5k more of a chance

Derrick wins while Steeplechasing over the dolty OK St. Runners. Go back to your homeless shelter Dave Smith!
