Hey Matt, I couldn't agree with you more. He was afraid of Rupp. If he was a true competitor, he would do the 100 meter freestyle against Michael Phelps.

German Fernandez is the Anti-Webb, and thank goodness for that. He will become the greatest middle-distance and distance runner in American history, eclipsing Prefontaine. BTW this interview sucks. "They were coming up on you?" Give me a break.

Saw the replay of the race on t.v. and it was awesome to watch. His 3:39 time is just as impressive as his victory. His frontrunning strategy takes guts and he's the "Kobe" of running!!!

Trindon Holliday is a coward because he didn't move up to the 10k to race Rupp!!!!
Come on guys, this is nationals, people are going to run the race where they can put forth the best result... And German raced the only two runners this year who beat Rupp (Ulrey and Centro), so give him some respect.

I hope Fernandez sticks with the 1,500 and 5000 and doesn't ever move up to the 10,000. Don't get me wrong 'cause I hella respect the 10 but it's not as fun to watch. If Fernandez went for the 1,500/5,000 double that would would be pretty bad ass.

I totally agree with anonymous coward. How is he a coward for going up against matt centrowitz, who beat rupp??? Its not his fault matt didn't make the final. And with the logic you guys are throwing, rupp would be a coward for not running the 800, or going down to the 1500. hahaha are you guys serious. I thought NCAA's was about scoring points for your team and winning titles. If you have a good chance in one event, why would you go compete in an event you're not as good at. C'est ridicule!

this is just stupid. Fernandez has run one 5k on the track ever and hes suppose to choose that over the 1500 which hes done well at and knows how to race.

If you guys did not make such a big deal about the haters and you stopped giving them attention maybe they would leave?

Nice interview though. Its a good idea to take some time off.

(Hahaha, okay, so no one is allowed to NOT like him just cuz of his accomplishments? You're an idiot. And i think everyone has a RIGHT to speak his or her mind and to call anyone anything they want. If you seriously take the time to b*tch about someone else's opinion, go **** yourself. Better yet, go j*rk off to some more German vids.

Oh, and since 99.999% of the ppl in this country aren't NCAA champs, why don't we all just leave the country so German can walk on his own ground like he's Jesus...(according to your statement))

None of you have earned a right to call german a coward. Most of you dont even deserve to walk on the same ground that german has walked on. Have any of you HATERS won a NCAA individual championship? How about as a freshman? Didnt think so. So until you have any accolades that are remotely close to german how about you shut the hell up. :)

I really don't see how you can call him a COWARD for not running the 5k against Rupp. I think the better word for that would be SMART for running his strengths. Obviously it paid off.

He admitted he was just a Freshman and had lots to learn. Rupp is on fire right now, favored in the 10k at USA's, and in the 5k could probably run with Teg and Solinsky, and lose only to Legat - of course German knows he is not in that league...yet. Rupp wasn't in that league even as a sophmore.

No doubt this kid has talent, and the brightest of futures...better than Rupp? I say his running style is stronger than Rupp, in mental toughness they are equals. I think his ultimate success it is a matter of patience and maturity ith respect to getting injured - and I think he is plenty smart enough to know that.

That's like saying Johnny dutch only ran the 400m hurdles because he was scared of the 110 field. You sound ridiculous. Certain people are better at certain things, so they do them.

He abandoned the 5k after Peyton Jordan because he realized that if he had a tough time beating Mead and Derrick, then he wouldnt stand a chance against Rupp. Everyone wanted to see a Rupp vs. Fernandez showdown, and in that respect, he disappointed.

He is legit at 1500m, no doubt about that (more than legit). But i wouldve liked to see him challenge himself

So by your rationale hes a coward because he rather face Centro who beat Rupp in the 1500m. Hummmmm he's a freshman and NCAA champ, were was Rupp at that stage? Taking nothing from Rupp he's amazing, but your rationale is idiotic.
