i think the Japanese coaches want the athletes to be @ least first for as long as they could hold???

I noticed that one of the Japanese runners in this race was leading at the 1k mark and ended up almost in last. The same thing happened with that Japanese guy in Solinsky and Tegenkamp's heat of the 5k. What is going on? Did the Japanese coaches tell them to go out like idiots or something?
