- See Less - On August 17th Jenny Barringer broke her own American Record in the 3k Steeplechase running 9:22.26 while finish 9th in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Barringer first claimed the record when she surprisingly outkicked Anna Willard in Heusden (Race Vid HERE). Jenny was the 2007 USA Steeple champ and the runner-up to Willard at the 2008 US Olympic Trials. Barringer was also the NCAA champ in 2006 and 2008 (set NCAA record at that time at Drake). In 2006 and 2007 Jenny was the runner-up at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She was also named USATF Athlete of the Week twice in 2008 (6/18/08 & 7/23/08).
This has to go down as the best amercian female distance runner performance so far this yr and in a couple yrs. only thing that can compare recently would have to be shalane's 10k AR.
I love her confidence. Although she said she couldn't believe she wasn't scared. It takes a hunger to win and the confidence to know you are the best to do what she does.
First, I'm old enough to have watched Jim Beatty, Jim Ryan, Martin Liquori, Mary Decker Slaney, Dave Wottle et. al. And, except for Dave Wattle's '72 Olympic 800 championship I've never enjoyed a race more. Great Job Jenni.
Second, hey you guys, all the other American girls in the race are great people. Why say an unkind word about any of them? Shalane and Cara have already proven their mettle, and the others are on their way up. Shannon has many great days ahead of her, as does Miss Willard, both are already fabulous.
Third, yes, the TV coverage was horrific, they never even mentioned Jenny's name until it was 50 m to go and at the end the announcer said that she might be close to the collegiate record, when she blew it apart.
Fred Farkle said: Dude you're a crack up. Shalane was coming down so far from her usual distance. It was a chance to get a short speedy race in before nats. She even said it in her post race interview.
Jenny B coming from off the pace. Classic Wetmore strategy.
I was talking about Shannon Robury! Last years best female miler! NOT Shalane Flanagan America's best overall distance runner!
that was a great race I was yelling at the TV for Jenny B's to kick and go into her "BEAST MODE" and just as I did she responded I thought she won for a second. Great job Jenny keep it up, maybe go into beast mode a second earlier next time. Can't wait to see your next race!
Awesome Jenny! We were cheering you on! Avery is actually starting to think you might be faster than he is. Now THAT'S impressive! Good luck this week!
Not intending to put pressure on you Jenny but you ARE the new "Queen" of the middle distances and then some... WOW girl! This was the most exciting race I have ever seen you run and what a treat it was! Love your competitive spirit Jenny! 3:59.90 simply amazing!
One more thing.....hehe. This has got to be the most exciting time for women's distance running in the U.S.A.. Just look at this year compared to last. It's brilliant. I remember watching the trials and thinking why aren't the woman who don't have the standard even trying to race hard? Especially the 1500 and 800. It's a new wave of exciting and fresh talent and I love it. How do some of these woman have shoe contracts that constantly run 4:09 and up? It is going to be an AWESOME trials for World Champs.

just watched the tivo of Jenny's race--how could NBC not track her down and interview her after that race on TV--inexcusable--this girl is the future of distance promise in the USA and the rest of the sports world needs to find out about her--thank God for Flotrack
Josh LaBlanc said: Both Goucher's?...it is hard to say that Kara burned out after producing some of the fastest marathoning times by an american female and also some great performances on the track before turning to the marathon.
When Kara runs 2:20ish, then we'll talk about fastest marathoning times. Until then, she's just one of the fastest of the "current crop". Deanna ran way faster and Shalane WILL run way faster. Great performances on the track? Decent, good, yes. Great, no. Not being mean spirited at all, just honest. The hallow bronze doesn't count, Beijing does.
Jenny, YOU did great! Absolutely outstanding! Keep it up girlfriend. I've watched you work out at CU many times. Your hard work and dedication have paid off. You let you feet do the talking, unlike too many others.
Pretty sure Goucher(s) and Ritz haven't burnt out and if you say they did it isn't because of their collegiate careers so not sure what you based that off of. I don't see much of adam on the circuit, kara is doing pretty well last I checked, and Ritz hasn't had the greatest marathon performances but does well on track. wetmore focuses a lot on increasing ones maximum aerobic potential so, jenny should be just fine. look forward to what the future holds for her.

I just meant in terms of the few years of injuries they faced. Just a concern, nothing mean spirited.
Robert Rumsey said: I hope Mister Wetmore isn't burning Jenny out too early. There is sooo much running left to do. I LOVE that she is smashing records, but am concerned about her body. Look what happened to Goucher, Goucher and Ritz. Just a thought.

And speaking of a potential pro contract etc. That is another thing that I admire about Jenny B. She is definately NOT about the $. She simply loves to run and to compete, and to represent her school, and her country. She could have turned pro after the olympics but she didnt.
She could turn pro now but she wants to stay and race another year for the Bufs, with her team. She is endearing and refreshing, and a breath of fresh air IMO.
No, I don't find anything about Jennie "annoying" I see a hard working dedicated athlete who has even surprised herself, and exceeded her own expectiations. She is happy and celebrating. Why can't everyone be happy for her and celebrate with her instead of nit-picking?

Someone should write a running with the Buffaloes 2 about her and her senior year. :P

Great job Jenny! Spectacular race. I agree that the announcers might have been able to do a better job but not everybody is perfect. What was disappointing was watching it myself with a lap to go and saying to myself, "Wow, Jenny looks pretty good, I bet she has a good kick in store" and in the mean time the announcers ignored her until the last 100m.
Thinking about it, we've seen this kind of kick from Barringer before. Last time, she used it to get by Willard in the steeple at KBC-Nacht. This proves that she has some good speed.
It is too bad she is coming onto the pro market in such a bad financial time, because her contract would be/still will be unreal. In a healthy market I would say she could command 250k plus performance bonuses from Nike or someone else able/willing to put up the money. In todays market that number might go down to 150k but she should still be the highest paid female runner out there.
way to go jenny. yea, jenny did not get a single shred of press. willard is a great competitor but she probably gets the attention cuz she is a little "flashier" than jenny.
Bruce Denton said: Bring Frank Shorter or Craig Masback back for the distance coverage. Lewis Johnson is a knob. Hell I can do it better from my living room then that guy. Go Jenny! I think she had the freshest legs out there because she hasn't raced herself to death early in the season.
submit a video with your race call ... I would love to hear you announce and show up the NBC guys
Jenny's last few races were time trials like she said, this is the first time she's had any competition really. The NCAAs and USAs are pretty close together though, i wouldn't worry about her till then.
I hope Mister Wetmore isn't burning Jenny out too early. There is sooo much running left to do. I LOVE that she is smashing records, but am concerned about her body. Look what happened to Goucher, Goucher and Ritz. Just a thought.
Barringer was not a favorite of this race, and Anna had run a great 800m so she got most of the attention. Congratulations to Barringer! Fastest 1500m by an American women in seven years!!

Agreed that the NBC coverage was terrible. Lewis Johnson forgot Anna Willard's name half way through the race and they didn't even mention Barringer until the last 100 meters. I get the sense that Dwight Stones is the only member of that crew that is actually a fan of track and keeps up on recent developments.
She thought 4:04 and she got 3:59 amazing. Don't EVER underestimate yourself girl!
Is this race going up on video? Got see it again. Jenny is THE American Women to watch. Why didn't she get a special promo on NBC like her competitor did that she beat?
She is just glowing, and deservedly so. Incredible. And everyone is excited for you Jenny. Realized potential. Little Jenny B. from Oviedo, Fl. does her state and country proud, once again. Big congrats.
Is is me or does NBC have the stupidist anouncers ever. Lewis Johnson quote, "She is going to be really close to that collegiate record." What a moron. She trashed it. And you didn't need to wait on the official time to know it.
Second, hey you guys, all the other American girls in the race are great people. Why say an unkind word about any of them? This is the code for the entire race. Well done Jenny, we hope you get on the medal stand in Berlin. You're awesome.
