I have to say I admire racewalkers because the world record in the mile, 2 mile and 5k is faster than I can run.

I had a friend in North Carolina who was on the national team in the 20K walk, but he was only about 6th to 10th best in the country. A guy on his team was giving him grief for being a walker. To shut the guy up, this racewalker agreed to race this runner in a running mile race at the all-comers meet that week. I saw the photo from the paper that showed this walker, who NEVER ran in training (due to old running knee injuries) winning this running mile race in 4:20. His bone headed runner teammate was so far back on the home straight that he was fuzzy in the newspaper photo. So racewalking is not a joke, and racewalkers are real athletes, though the level of performance in the U.S. is lower than in many countries.

Racewalking is not a joke. It is every bit as aerobically demanding as running, with the added technical requirement of continuous contact with the ground and a straightened knee from the moment of contact through the leg passing the center of gravity. Plus, elite 20K racewalkers maintain the same cadence as elite 800 meter runners, but they have to maintain it for 1 hour and 20 minutes rather than just 1 and 3/4 minutes. Elite racewalkers beat elite runners in VO2 max testing. The only athletes beating them are cross country skiers. It seems to me, when you consider this, that racewalking is one of the most impressive events in track and field.
