Also, the Ethiopians have neglected the middle distances in preference for 5K on up. This race was exceptional in having Ethiopian athletes go 3:48,3:50,3:55. The fastest Ethio 1500 ever may still be Geb's indoor 3:31 from about ten years ago.

The statute mile (1609.344meters or 1769yds) is exclusively used in UK and USA. The 1500m is the distance that is commonly retained elsewhere. But some leagues in Europe are starting to add the event in their meets. But most major international meets still concentrate in the metric mile (1500m). Most ethiopians don't even know people compete in or what is the statute mile.
