Ok so this has obviously turned into who is better Rollie or Watson which is terrible because Coach Geiger has been a very good coach for a long time but to take away from what Watson did at Auburn is plan ignorance. There was DEVELOPMENT at Auburn both US and foreign.

Stating that Auburn's top 4 were all imported Kenyan's is completely incorrect. Here is the top 8 last year at Auburn and lets not say Rollie doesn't get the top talent he gets footlocker finalist EVERY year
Auburn's top 5 last year
Mecheso- Footlocker finalist out of Atlanta, I think he was 9th at the finals. Yes Ethopian background but ran high school in the US. He was 16th an NCAA XC as a freshmen and 7th at NCAA 10,000 and an 28:26. Went from 8:56 3200m to 8;02 13:50 and 28:26 in 1 year
Kibet- Junior college transfer went from 29:30's to 28:26 as a first year Auburn student and was 7th indoors at the NCAA's.
Kibioywo- Transfer from NAIA. Ran 1 cross country season at his school and was like 8th at NAIA nationals. Went to Auburn and developed into a 2 time NCAA south regional champion an SEC 1500m champion and an NCAA 5000m finalist
Weerts- From Belgium 8:08 14:11 kid before coming over and after 2 years runs 3:43 7:54 and makes the NCAA 5000m final
Novack- from alabama 4:19 9:30's? was 2nd on his high school cross country team behind Robert bedsole who went to NC State and did nothing there. Novack meanwhile runs 8;08 14;11 and 8;53 steeple
Matthews (now at Providence) comes over as a 3:52 guy and run 1:50 3:46
7th man was Joby Peake from Georgia who never broke 10;00 in HS. In his first year at Auburn he ran 8:30's and 14:42 on the track.
Auburn's 8th guy was a freshmen Jeff Sanders from Louisanna who didn't break 4;20 or 9:40 in HS and ran 3:47 8:20 and 14:40's as a true freshmen.
So out of Auburn's top 8 you have ZERO direct from kenya athletes and only 2 from Kenya period.
As for track
Going to NC States Webpage and looking at their ALL time results they are very similar to the marks at Auburn while Watson was there.
NC state 10,000 all time 28:37 28:46 28:48 28:28 AUBURN 28:26 (mecheso) 28:26 (Kibet) 28:55 (Andrew Heath)
3000m NC State 7:55 7:58 8:00 8:01 8:02 8:02 AUBURN 7:54 Weerts 7:59 Kibet 8:04 Mecheso 8:04 Kibet 8:06 Jordan Davis 8;08 Scott Novack

as a response below, not sure if UNC has had any podium finishes. And as far as Watson's "accomplishment" of having Auburn finished 5th at nats last year, its not that impressive when you go on a recruiting trip to Africa to PURCHASE 4 guys to run in your varsity. Rollie has had great accomplishment s in taking American talent and DEVELOPING runners. Take John Martinez, Patrick Campbell, and Ryan Hill for instance, none of whom were even sub 9 guys in high school.

seriously, the kids at NC State do this year in and year out, congrats to Evan and Adam, but this just elucidates UNC's XC inferiority to the rest of the ACC, especially the 'Pack

Thank you for this interview. It is nice to see different athletes get exposure. I know we all like to see interviews of the best of the best but it is nice to see a wide variety of athletes getting interviewed and recognized for the hard work that they all put in.

Evan Watchempino and Adam Cunningham of UNC

Last week at the ACC Cross Country Championships Evan Watchempino and Adam Cunningham became the first All- ACC cross performers at UNC in the past 7 years when the finished 11th and 12th respectively. At the same meet a year ago they were 34th and 35th. They also led their Tarheel squad to a 6th place team finish, which is the highest placing since before 2002. With the season winding down, Evan and Adam will be aiming their efforts towards the Regional Championships in Louisville, KY next weekend where they will be running for two at-large individual berths to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute.
