Hey Coach Franklin,
I'm impressed with your philosophy of the total package-- confidence in athletics, confidence in academics, and confidence socially. You are definitely a great mentor for your collegiate athletes! I enjoyed your interview very much.

Generally threshold workouts reach around 85% of your maximum heart rate for a 20 - 30 min (or more depending on the race/distance trained) duration. Ususally this is in a tempo run or long repeats (such as miles) with short rest (one to two min). What Joe stated about running too hard in tempo runs is very true and can really fatigue you for the future workouts and races. In the past, I have completed tempo or threshold workouts too quickly (at sea level) and have ruined the rest of my training week. It really disappointing when you want to run another hard workout at the end of the week, but your body and mind can only produce easy running workouts. Great video. Joe seems like a great coach to have for the team. Best wishes on this new coaching opportunity.

Joe Franklin on training in Albuquerque

For most of his career Joe Franklin had always coached in Indiana. When taking the job at New Mexico there was a big factor involved in training the Coach Franklin had never dealt with and it wasn't the green chile. The effects of altitude were unknown and new to Franklin's approach. He talks about making this transition and how it changed the way things were done. He also talks about confidence and the different pieces in our lives that make a successful athlete. This season marks the start of Franklin's third year as head coach of University of New Mexico.
