Coach Willy Wood, great job. Good luck in your upcoming xc meet. From a x cross country runner from Kansas Wesleyan. Juan De Luna from Eagle Pass, Tx. Go Coyotes!!!
Nice call C Hatch on Columbia not winning Heps. You were dead on with that one. As far as periodization - what are you all waiting to peak for? What place were you?
Congrats to the Lions and Tigers, but guys, no coverage?
You're already in NYC for the Marathon, and t's only a couple of bucks to ride the subway up to the Van Cortlandt. It would have been a great cap to your feature on the Columbia guys.
(11:30) the team is so much stronger and deeper...
just the way he said that made me laugh.
NYC is a great place to go to school and to train those guys should consider themselves lucky to be going to a great school in a great location.
good luck at heps!
For all the haters,
two-fold:
If you think you cannot run and train well for long-distance in New York, you've never been there. If you live in some other part of the country or you live in the boondocks and want to make other assanine comments besides questioning the volume of concrete in NYC or the lifestyle quality, refrain from posting. Is it 70 everyday with Balboa Park to run in, no...BUT I can't think of too many cities in which I would rather train. And, if you don't live in the city in the Northeast, who's going to plow your trails for you during Nov-April? NYC has many options and you can take the train up the valley if you want to. Just look at the champs who have come out of the City just recently: Bierbaum, Kiplagat, etc. We can't all live in sunny Cali.
Second,
I don't go to Columbia. I'm a Harvard fan (that's right - Harvard had D. Chenoweth top-10 at Pre-Nats), and by the way, Harvard is also in the freaking city, and they MANAGE. But...instead of bashing the workout, the team, why don't some of you posters try a)coaching a DI team b)actually running a sub-25 or sub-24 8k. Do you even presume to know the EXACT intent of the workout? Contrary to popular belief, SPEED workout/intervals does not mean run your fastest 2000 four times...it has a SPECIFIC PURPOSE. Unlike some people, I don't waste my days posting on every video on this website (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.), but I've had enough of the constant idiocy spouted here by the armchair Ritzenheins who should get off the couch and run their 120 miles this week...

Track #2- The Cat Empire.
The Columbia Lions.
The Puma sponsorship.
And where I live in Texas, I have to watch out for big o' bobcats and panthers (aka pumas, mountain lions, catamounts and cougars). I've run into the panthers 8 times in less than 2 years and as close as 50 meters away from me and 100 meters from the front door.
Enjoyed the video. Great job everyone. For me, it would be a nice place to visit. I don't like the crowds and noise. I can't wait to see if Columbia can overtake Princeton OR if there will be any surpirses from other teams.
so their top 2 guys could barely run 24:0x 8k pace with 2 min rest in between reps on a flat fast surface. Good luck Columbia making nationals especially after a poor performance at pre-nats where they most likely didn't pick up any points
running in central park at night is awesome, I do it all the time.
just stay where it's lit up and you should be fine. nyc is always ranked as one of, if not the, safest city in the US
it took me 5:19 to run from campus to Central Park, its very close. you'd be surprised to see how much soft surface is there. there isn't many cooler scenes then running on the Res at night and seeing the lights from the NYC skyline. something you've got to experience
Columbia doesnt ever take a cab to practice. The coaches will take cabs to the workouts in central, but the team runs there. Central park is literally 1/2 mile from campus. After that it is all soft surfaces.
No it isn't concrete they are running on in this video - its cinder, which is really great to run on. Columbia really has great places to train between Central Park, Riverside Park, VCP, and Rockafeller State Park - and never has to run on hard surfaces for more than just a few minutes.
It isnt concrete. the bridal path is a soft surface, its just a dark color. if you know where you are going, you can run on soft surfaces for a very long time in Central Park.
I think I'm viewing this correctly, but is that concrete they are running on? It doesn't look like gravel or packed dirt. How is that a good place to run? Especially long intervals of constant pounding on hard surface? For Cross County? I would have to disagree that it was a good place to run day in and day out for the most part. Maybe if they ran on the grass parts more...I've run at Central Park when I was up there for a Fordham invite and membered that most of the run had to end up being on pavement :(
Riding to practice in a cab and running around people on the reps? I may be small town but I'd rather train on a grass surface somewhere near to campus instead of dodging the dog-walkers and the pencil pushers on my fast days.
Chatch, that program has grown enormously. They are now 4x800m contenders year after year at Penn Relays. Check out flotrack's top 5 recruiting classes for this year. Why would kids flock to this program and forfeit scholarships? Consider that you might be overlooking something. 7 guys in front of Princeton's 4 last year at Heps. Merber was one of the fastest freshman milers in the nation last year. Unquestionably one of the deepest groups in the east, it's just a question of whether they can put their 1-2 in the top 5, which they will, if they haven't even started running intervals yet and they can walk into six minute 2k's off of base.
I am going to have to disagree with you on the "awesome recruiting classes" statement. If you look at the teams they race, they are picking up much bigger names. Princeton is led by Leung and Cabral, who were studs. Cabral broke the VCP 5K record at FLNE! Iona and Providence get major international studs, which draws in big American talent too. Syracuse has about 10 FL and NXN finalsts (and Columbia beat them at Regionals last year). Im not saying they have bad recruiting classes, but the few teams in the region/conference that beat them have just as awesome, if not better recruiting classes.
Columbia's top runner, Brendan Martin was 17th at NY Fed meet as a senior in HS, their 4th fastest at Prenats, Terance Prial was 50th as a senior at the Fed Meet that year. 3rd in that race was Steve Murdock, now at Syracuse (he was also 3rd at Foot Locker Finals that year). 6th in that race, Zack Predmore, now at Princeton. 9th in that race was Pat Dupont, now at Syracuse (and he was a junior, he won it the following year). And the guy who probably would have won the race, given that he won it soph year, had he not had all those health problems, Ryan Sheridan, is now at Iona. Even Columbia's blue chip HS stud, Kyle Merber, was known as more of a miler than 8k/10k guy. Also keep in mind that Columbia, and the other Ivys, have academic and financial limitations on the recruits they can get.
Honestly, I'm tired of hearing all the hype about Columbia year after year, considering the talent-level they pull in and the results they get. Willy Wood has been at Columbia for 15 years, yet I continue to hear that Columbia is an "up and coming program". How many years and how many awesome recruiting classes does it take to establish yourself? Can't fool me. These guys won't win HEPS and they won't make it to Nationals until Willy gets a better grip on training and periodization.
Nice video. Central Park is indeed a runner's paradise. This music is absolutely atrocious. Why don't you try Debussy or Delius or Vaughn-Williams for a nice change?

Why don't you quit LOLing at these pretty good runners and get your own butt out there. Everyone is not a Chris Derrick. What makes XC great is the various abilities and passion that all collegiate runners bring to the sport. If all we had were a few studs like Derrick it would be pretty boring.
I think it will our year at HEPS for the men. Kyle and Brendan are really pounding it but keep your eye on Justin ( the quiet man of CU XC) and Bobby and Gary. I do think Anthony Merra will surprise. The music you gotta love and the vibe but come 10/30 at VCP we shall see who can bring it. I am thinking blue and white and not orange and black
couldn't flotrack tape a better team from the east? iona, georgetown, villanova, syracuse, princeton? come on there are so many better teams than columbia on the coast.
Hey there Delilah whats it like in New York City...I'm a thousand miles away but girl tonight you look so pretty....yes you do....Time Square can't shine as bright as you....you know its true!
Awesome workout guys, I love running 2ks as a workut and having them do it in Central Park was incredible too. I've never gotten the chance to run in Central Park but I definitely want to try that at least once now. The music was great too!
Loved the workout, our team does the same work, our top guy runs close to their splits but, he gets a longer rest, and we run through a wooded area. I loved it when that dog tried to take a bite out of one of the runners..
Central Park, NYC-- thats where you can find the Columbia XC teams getting ready for their championship season. Last year the Columbia men finished second to Princeton at Heps by 3 points. Two weeks later they finished third in the Northeast Region and just missed a spot at the NCAA Championships (last year's Kolas Calc Final NCAA Picks). The men are currently the 4th ranked team in the Northeast Region and have a tough road ahead as they will have to take down one of the teams in front of them- Iona, Providence, or Syracuse- to get to the NCAA meet. But before the regionals is contested, the Lions will be looking to dethrone the Princeton Tigers at the 2009 Heps XC Championships. Princeton is coming off their third straight championship, while Columbia is looking for only their third EVER Heps title. Go get 'em!!

Also, the Princeton women topped their 17 points last year by scoring a perfect 15 this year. Amazing

That guy in the 3rd group with the compression shorts has the lowest arm carriage I've ever seen.

Less vid on the runners, more vid of Delilah. Someone should right a song about her.
