This is just business, they pay him to run to attract more people to make more money from the race....so maybe they should speak Portuguese since THEY are making money because of him.

Thanks for your measured and sober response, Jack. That's "imagine" and "you're" and "they," by the way.
As to the "why" question, if the bulk of your income came in a land with a different language and you were coming back there for the third or fourth time, AND you were a world class athlete, which means you are a public performer, wouldn't you have the vaguest interest in learning the language?

Yea Jake, your objections is less with Marilson, that's obvious from your first comment you idiot. Try to show some respect, I cannot imagin how hard this guy has worked to be able to compete at this level, along with all his natural talents. Your just being stupid, almost 100% of the Brazil population speak Portuguese, why should the be studying English if they are not in politics? That's just a personal choice and if you are so concerned about some public policy in this sport you should probably get some help.

Yeah, lighten up on this Jake person. The point is that press conferences like this are utterly useless for everyone concerned, and the NYRR pays so much attention to so many details that you have to wonder why they keep getting the translation business so utterly wrong....in a city that has more people who speak another language PLUS English than any other on Earth.

The problem is that they don't LOOK for good translators who know something about running. They need to hire me. Marilson, se você quiser um tradutor que realmente sabe de correr, me liga! Eu posso te ajudar!!! Você só me paga a viagem e as comidas.

He doesn't HAVE to do anything, and it's not a matter of my convenience. The World Marathon Majors made it very clear as a policy that they expect a certain public relations role to be part of an athlete's responsibility.
My objection is less with Marilson, whose main function is clearly to run fast, than it is with an agent who doesn't seem to understand or care that his marketability will diminish quickly - and with the NYRR, which, in a city that has the UN and many other international outfits, seems incapable of providing good translators.

Isn't it about time this guy learned some English, since he's taken hundreds of thousands of dollars out of NYC? He's certainly not of much public relations value. The translation is terrible. None of these questions got a decent answer.
umm dude, i can kinda see what you are trying to say from a business/public relations side, but your comment and response comes off as ignorant and close minded. He lives in brazil, is a brazilian citizen, and competes for brazil, he does not have to know english for your convenience. Seriously, think before you type.

Has Ryan Hall accepted large appearance fees repeatedly to run in Brazil?
The larger issue is that NONE of the answers gave any insight or news value. Please don't even try and pretend that they did.

Yea, and Ryan Hall has to learn Portuguese if he is going to win a marathon in Brazil :)
