the course record is 2:07 high and Tergat has never gone under 2:10 on it. This course is slow man. If anyone 2:06 here they could run 2:02 in London

I'm a big fan of Ryan, but I have to say, he needs to stop focusing on thew past. Sure, he didn't do as well as he wanted to at Boston but at least he gave it an effort. He just needs to start putting all of us effort into his races. Sure the conditions weren't ideal, but he still finished 4th. I love ya Ryan, just keep your head up and keep on running.

Recently one of the running magazines ran a story about Ryan, and the title of the article was something like, "Ryan Hall: He's awesome, but will he ever win?"
And my response was/is: I don't care if he's never the first one to cross the line. To my mind, he is a champion; an amazingly talented and inspiring runner who's brought U.S. running so, so far. I know that's prolly not enough for him; I know he wants to win. But I'm just saying that to me, his place in running history is secure.

I'm very similar to Ryan with the whole "sitting off of the back of the pack" method, it really does seem like you are more apt to be dropped. This interview really helps me realize that it happens at almost all levels.

I'd love to see Ryan run up to his potential. He could have, and should have, been with the leaders in both Boston and NY, and he's said it.

He's been doing more training at even higher altitudes the past year and a half, and that doesn't seem to be agreeing with him, at least in his racing. He has come down from altitude to run cross country, some 10k and 15k races, and his last three marathons, and each time he was saying he was in fantastic shape, according to his training. Each time he ran a disappointing time (even according to him). He was getting all sorts of hype because he was talking American records and PB's, yet he was struggling and not winning.
Ryan does a lot of training at SLOWER than his real race pace at 7000+ feat. His BIG tempo run a few weeks a go was at 5 min/mile pace, which is only 2:11 pace. That was the FASTEST he's gone for anything long. Maybe you can't always run 15-20 seconds/mile SLOWER than race pace and expect everything to click when you go down to sea level. Last month, when he visited NY, he went for a hard 10 mile tempo on part of the course, and once again he ran significantly SLOWER than he was expecting. He couldn't even break 5 mins/mile!
Dathan had the same problem when he ran at Altitude in Boulder. Now that he's doing faster stuff and sea level, he's become a new runner. I fear that Ryan might continue to underachieve, unless he makes some major changes in his training and race prep, beyond just running closer to the lead, like he mentioned. If he thinks that's the only problem, I don't see him winning any time soon.
Maybe Alberto will be getting another thoroughbred in his stable soon....
Doesn't Meb train at altitude? He has done ok with an olympic silver and NY win on Sunday. What Ryan should do is to keep learning from races, puttin the work in, and aiming for his goals.

Thanks to Ryan and Flotrack for doing this interview.

Flotrack, if you get another interview can you ask what was happening behind the lead pack from mile 19 and on? We got Jorge's take, it would be nice to hear what Ryan saw & thought back there

Flotrack should do some videos about Meb's Faith, Perseverance and Dedication like the many they have done for Ryan Hall. It's only fair considering Meb won an Olympic Silver medal in the Marathon, suffered through injury and emerged victorious at the NYC Marathon. This is an AMAZING comeback story !!!!

The comments about Hall's altitude training and relative lack of speed are right on the money. In all his races he is fast and smooth, but seems to lack the ability to go to another gear and really crank up the leg speed. I think if it had been Hall instead of Meb racing for the win over the last two miles we might not have had an American winner.

Ryan ran a great race nonetheless, and I, and everyone else knows that he is possible of running a way greater race. It is difficult for Ryan to go through but at the same time, his disappointment is a way of letting all us "average" runners fell in the same realm. We all have bad races, and sometimes they are the most important ones. Seeing Ryan struggle today brings us all back to earth; that anyone (even a guy who runs 150 plus or minus miles a week) can go up to the line with all the confidence, which I know Ryan did, and not succeed. There is always another race, and another opportunity to shin. Never give up Ryan, we look up to you.

Matt, just because Ryan didn't get a win today does not mean he hasn't been blessed by god. Look at the great things this young man has already done and the great things he has done outside of running through his faith and with god help. Ryan feels his faith is a big part of his training and success and who could argue? Ryan is a great young man and deserves much more repect than some people are giving him. I personally am ashamed that some people in the distance running community could be so hateful about Ryans performance today.
reply

Eric   November 1 at 9:52pm
All the hateful comments are rather immature. Ryan obviously is going to be upset about his performance when he had a different result in mind. I haven't run a marathon yet so I can't relate but i'm sure that after six months of preparation and planning, it hurts to not meet your goals. He has the right attitude and fitness to win these races, feel as if people put too much pressure on Ryan. USA is plentiful with talent but for some reason feels the need to dump all the pressure on Ryan's shoulders.

God bless

Is it me or he's suffering from the two marathons a year bug? Hall's an awesome runner, but his current schedule is the fastest way to get stale and slow. The man needs to get out on the track or start running some shorter distances in between his marathons.

I thought Hall was going to win it when I saw him catch up after the First Street hill; he'd been tucked the entire race and was looking almost as smooth as Meb did in the last mile. Ryan seems oblivious to his problem, but it seems pretty obvious that he constantly lets the race get away from him. He races like he's soloing a time trial and Zeus willing, the leaders will keel over and he'll win. He just doesn't seem to have that racer's edge

Run this marathon 5 times and you could get 5 different winners. So much depends upon the pace of the lead pack. Fast, slow even pace, variable surges, all affect the performances of the runners and their present conditioning. It seems that the best marathoners can adapt to whatever pace is thrown down while still running within themselves. Also I think New York would be a hard marathon to win on your first attempt due to the difficulty of the course.
