2009 ING NYC Champion Meb Keflezighi Recaps His Race

but I feel that although US distance running is on the comeback our mainstream American media keeps entertaining usually one golden boy a little more than I would like to see. Ryan Hall seems to be getting all the press these days, yet Dathan, who finished the Olympic marathon ahead of Ryan didn't get the space or press he deserved back in '08. Meb came out of nowhere and worked the field in NY, with Ryan in fourth, although Ryan was touted as winning the thing and everywhere I turned, from polls to interviews, Ryan was the center of attention. Perhaps we can shine some light on more of our wonderful and rich characters in the rest of the US distance running scene. It is largely about strategy on raceday not time and (in my two examples) Dathan and Meb came through on raceday when it counted. I am not hating on anyone, only pointing out that it is very political and strategic the way media chooses athletes to focus on. It is definitely great for our sport in general, but sidelines equally deserving stories. In Meb's case, we in America haven't diversified our understanding of what "American" means and maybe if we did, we wouldn't see the Ryan Hall's of running (and all they represent) as the only representation of our American running community. This is wholly a critique of media. I respect everyone's accomplishments in NY and beyond.

Everyone should read this if you either respect Meb for his accomplishments as a USA runner or not. (I openly will say I have great respect and honor to be part of the same country as Meb)

it was great seeing the lead pack have five americans pretty late in the race, as well. Go meb!!!!

i was about ready to cry and tear up from the emotions he had when he crossed that finish went down to his knees and gasped for breath. So much pride and strength. Really makes USA runners think...why not 'US'? Meb is such a great talent and anyone who says he is not a true "American" can really take that crap somewhere else. GO MEB!! now take this confidence to the CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

I remember shaking this guy's hand from the front row of the Olympic Trials in 2004 after his 10k. His run there very much inspired me to take distance running seriously, so it's so amazing to watch him bounce back and take the NYC Marathon in amazing fashion, WITH a PR. Very inspirational, congrats Meb!

Welcome back to the Winner's Circle Meb :) You have always shown yourself to be a Warrior and a Survivor. Your NYC Marathon victory is a testament to your drive and dedication to be the best you can be. Maybe Flotrack should do some videos about your faith and determination the way they have for Ryan Hall on several occasions.
