Gb Coach   October 14, 2008 at 3:50am
ReeF, why 'should' he run on his own? It's an out and back on a straight road and coaches like to see exactly how the athletes are going during each effort. Take a look at the coach's frame and rethink your suggestion of getting on the bike with Matt.......riding with somebody running maybe 2:45/km repeats is not as easy as you might think! I've used the bike a lot, but not everybody can do this, and if they've decided that the horn is useful then there's nothing wrong with it. Having said that, Matt was using his watch for splits, so it's probably more useful to use the horn when theres a bigger group workout going on.

Great job Ryan.

the coach doesnt like the guys to always use watches. he likes them to run off feel. so instead of someone constantly looking at the watch to see when they need to stop, etc... the coach lets them know with the beep of a horn. also he measures the distance because its a common loop and they see how far they get compared to weeks prior. thats it really, the guys like having the coach out there

I like how everyone that posted didn't talk about the workout.
Clowns man. I don't understand why the coach was driving behind him the whole time. Why couldn't he run on his own? Better yet, have the coach bike with him. Someone explain the reasoning behind that driving deal.

That was my motivation to run fast while at Clemson, to stay ahead of the dust and exhaust. When Master P was riding dirty in the Van at Issaqueena, he showed no mercy for the weak. I really thought he was going to run someone over at some point during my time there.

Wow, that video brought back some memories of running out there.

Canadians don't say aboot. They say about but the ou is stronger and emphasized. It's sounds more like abowt. If you ever listen to people with Scottish accents they pronounce it in a similar way.

Whoa....lets get back to the video and leave this combat for some other time; it's been my experience that as runners Amer/Canad all get along 'cause of our obsession with the sport

No, he said about. I recommend taking a gander here for those who hear "aboot"...http://www.yorku.ca/twainweb/troberts/raising.html

Notably, see this:
To American ears, the Canadian pronunciation of about often sounds like aboot, but this is only an illusion. Because the more familiar pronunciation of /aw/ is articulated with the tongue in a low position, and because it raises to a mid position in Canadian English when the vowel precedes the voiceless obstruents listed above, speakers of other varieties of English will immediately detect the vowel raising, but will sometimes think that the vowel has raised farther than it actually does, all the way to /u/, which is a high vowel--hence the mishearing (and not-quite-right imitation) of this pronunciation as aboot.

Regardless of the fact that Americans (aren't Canadians American? just a thought) are ignorant and insulated, he DEFINITELY said "aboot." If you can't hear that, you probably say "aboot" too.

Excuse This Canadian Rant   May 29, 2008 at 3:58pm
This is a public service message to the United States. Despite popular belief, MOST Canadians do not say the word "A-Boot" instead of saying "about." I don't hear this Matt guy say aboot and I've never heard any other Canadian say that word before...just like I have never heard an American say woof instead of wolf. Please stop trying to make it part of our national identity. All it does it perpetuate another erroneous falsehood - that all Americans are an irgnorantly insulated people. "Aboot" is "About" with a Maritime accent. Period.

Episode #6 - Go TIGERS!

Uploaded By: Flotrack
5 years ago Matt Clark came to Clemson as a miler, now its his final season as a Tiger. Last year at NCAAs he made the 5k final but missed out on All-American honors. This year he ran 28:49 to qualify for the 10k and with only a few weeks left in the season his goal is to not only become All-American but to also better his chances at competing in the Olympic Trials. In this workout he is joined by freshman Matt Hughes, a steepler from Canada. Excerpts from Clark's interview can be heard throughout the workout. Listen to the full interview
