I enjoyed the race coverage on Flotrack. Really authentic and it's clear you guys are loving as much as us. I watched this race and I was totally motivated to go on a tempo run after your commentary. You guys are amazing and I hope you continue what you're doing.

Who cares about the marathon. They need to run the 10k.

It's nice to see an athlete who is humble and geninue like Shalane. It's a nice contrast to the ego-driven world of other professional sports. Most professional runners tend to have their ego in check anyway though, with a few exceptions (cough: Alan Webb).

Does anyone know why Kara didn't run Cardinal, she said she was going to last week in her interview but then didn't start. I hope she's not injured but all of their group pulled out so they might be doing something else.

OK, maybe Kara has footspeed. She still won't run 30:30, and she won't beat Shalane.

the odd and random questions are from local media in palo alto/san francisco. you can tell b/c of the sound and where it's coming from in relation to when she looks at the camera for the other q's.

Even though they might ask "dumb" questions I think it's a good thing journalists are at least trying.

TJ_X wrote "I think Shalane's just trying to be nice to Kara. Kara doesn't have the footspeed to run 30:30."

I am curious about this statement just for arguments sake if there was an athlete who ran the same 1500 and 3k times as Shalene and has also ran a fast half marathon say sub 67 in that case would they have a shot at the 10k record?

If so, I might suggest that Kara's 1500 PR of 4:05.14 (2006) and 3k PR of 8:34.99 (2007) are fairly close to Shalene's 1500 PR of 4:05.86 (2007) and 3k of 8:33.25 (2007)and she might have the same "footspeed".

Flanagan Vs. Goucher   May 5, 2008 at 5:01pm
re: shalane and kara

i dont think theyre focus is on the same thing. to say kara doesnt have the footspeed to run 30:30 is crazy. she did run sub 15 for the 5k last fall and that was after worlds... i like both of these runners but they have two totally different mindsets. shalane is wanting to run fast right now (as she usually does early on) and kara has already made it clear that she isnt worried about records right now, but focusing more on running a strong tactical race in june and august. i dont know if kara could get the record, but i wouldnt put it past her. my hats off to shalane though; that was an amazing pace! shalane and kara are both 2 of my favorites!

Those other reporters have a different audience, one more general, so those reporters ask those kind of human interest/obtuse questions which will appeal to non-runners.

Did you ever have one of those days when everything was right? You're peaking in training, you're rested, you feel good, you're eating well, ya got new spark plugs in your car, ya won the Publisher's Clearing House prize from Ed McMahan! That's what Shalane looked like in this race.

Reporters, right on. I especially liked this exchange:

"Your mom is like a former world super ninja champion runner, right?"

"I have no idea, to be honest."

I found it funny how she gave all the other journalists half-hearted answers (mostly because of their quality) but really appreciated true racing/training questions from Flotrack.
