- See Less - Steve Scott is the greatest US distance runner of all time. Scott won six US 1,500 meter crowns and four indoor mile crowns. Scott has run sub four mins in the mile 136 times; more then any other athlete in the world. Track and Field News ranked Scott # 1 in the US 10 times and 11 times they ranked him top ten in the world. Scott qualified for three Olympics but only ran in two because of the 1980 US boycott. Scott?s best finish on the world stage was second at the 1983 World championships. Scott holds multiple US records; his most famous is the 3:47.69 outdoor mile record. Scott also holds the indoor mile, 2,000 meters and 1,500 meter records. In college at UC-Irvine Scott won the NCAA 1500 as a senior.
great guy. Steve is the american greatest miler. Silver at Worlds, 137 sub 4. Ran very agressively at 84 olympics, I truly believe he gould had medal. Most "natural" runner, and still the american holder for the mile.
One thing about Scott is his long-term consistency. He and John Walker were battling each other to run the most sub 4:00 miles in history (I think Scott has the record), and was still running close to sub-4:00 at 40. Heck, he still looks like he might be able to run pretty well!
All I can add is that I still consider Steve, along with Coe and Walker three of the great milers we all followed way back when. Like Steve mentioned (before the fact) he will have mixed feelings when his record 'falls' and who wouldn't, yet its reassuring to see the mantle pass to a great athlete like Alan who will go on to many more great "feets"!!
Great interview, and, he is entitled to his opinion. This is a great individual who showed great courage and perserverance as a runner. Steve took time out of his busy schedule to speak at a low level cross country banquet at my school in 1982 and I ran into him in an airport 20 years later and he took the time to talk to me and my daughters and was very cordial when asking for an autograph. He is an ambassodor for the sport. I know some of you don't like the comments made about the sprinters, but, who could blame anyone for feeling the frustrations after the likes of Justin Gatlin, Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, etc.
I don't view the 84 Olympics as a failure - I view it as his greatest display of guts. All or nothing, in front of the biggest audience in history. Its guts, because, among other things, he _knew_ it had a big chance for bigtime failure. "Sit and (try to) kick" with Coe would have been failure.
how is it untrue? he wasn't saying every single sprinter is on drugs, he's just saying every major sprint star (AR/WR holders) we've had has been busted for drugs, tim montgomery, busted, gatlin, busted, marion jones, busted. it's an extreme annoyance to every track athlete when every time we see a great figure in sports like our sprinters getting world records, they test positive for some sort of drug. that's why i think he said it.
scott i have lost all respect for all. what a stupid generalization to say that all 100 meter runners have been on drugs. how would he feel if mo greene said that all distance runners were sissies.
You're right. It maybe untrue, but just think about how often drug issues have been brought up around sprinters compared to distance runners. No one should be using drugs (in my opinion) but like Steve said, you can always count on sprinters to be "playing with fire"... they need to watch out or they're gonna get "burned" one day.

Great interview with a terrific athlete and very classy guy. He was a great representative for U.S. track and field. However, I thought his comments about Webb were perhaps a little premature. Webb is still only 24, Scott was 26 when he broke the American mile record and Coe was 30! when he set the 1500 world record, so I for one am going to reserve my judgment about Webb until his career is over. I think the next 3-4 years for Webb will determine how track history remembers him.
Scott visited my team during our training camp at Mammoth Mountain last summer....his presentation was fantastic and he know a ton about the sport. He also is a true fan of the sport. Besides a runner he is also a really funny and likeable person.
i admire tremendously this man not just of what he did with the running but remember he beat the BIG C comming back from that is just well above anything else. He speaks with knowldege and wisdom something that many runners should sit, ponder and then run
American Record holder for the Mile talks about why his record should be broken and about the people he thinks would be able to break it and the reasons behind it. July 19, 2007
Wow lol...
