Where is Webbs gold medal then you ignorant americans! i feel sorry for the guy because he has been so misguided! whoever told the guy he would do well at the worlds after running an american mile record over 6 weeks before needs their head checked! congratulations to Lagat tho, i was pleased that such a great ambassador of the sport finally got what he has deserved for such a long time! funny tho how some goofy short american miler had you all on tenter hooks and not 1 word was said with regards to Lagat and how well he will perform! shame on you IGNORANT americans!

"Ryan" (comments below) is not really Jim Ryun. Jim Ryun ran at the Mexico City games in 1968 when he was 21, not 25, as "Ryan" wrongly says. The real Jim Ryun knows his own age! Also the real Jim Ryun would be much more gracious than the comments here made by "Ryan."

I love track and hate to see the negitive comments shown here. I rooted for Jim Ryan from the days he was in high school. I was at Berkeley when he first set the world record in the mile. It is very disapointing to see a great runner make childish remarks about another great runner. Give Webb his due. Shame on you Jim.

Steve Scott comments intrigue me. I wonder whether he really believes that or that it's a marketing ploy recognizing that if people view Webb that way the entire sport will benefit. As far as Webb becoming the best American ever, however, he has a long way to go. In my book I was better as a freshman than he is now. After all, I did own the world record in both the mile and 800. When I won a silver at Mexico City at age 25 it was widely considered a disappointment. To beat that Webb will have to win Olympic GOLD, run 1:40 and 3:41! GOOD LUCK!

Ryan   August 1, 2007 at 8:07am
Unless he was on roids in high school, there is little reason to suspect it now. While this is a breakthrough season, he did run 1:47/3:53 six years ago as a prep, so the has always been there. Someone wrote that Webb can't win with all the negativity out there (if he runs poorly he's a flake, if he runs fast he's on roids), perhaps that's true, but it shouldn't be because his breakthrough has long been anticipated by all who are paying attention.

a) webb will not win a medal at the worlds, u americans are so narrow minded its unreal, can i remind you that osaka is end of august not end of july! lokk at mr bekele for instance, OH MY GOD he was beaten by mottram, yeh because he is too clever to peak at such an awkward time of the year! you cannot double peak in such a short space of time! Congratulations to Webb, he is looking fantastic but a medal at the worlds... NO CHANCE! you heard it hear first!

I don't think there is any reason to accuse Alan of drug use. His times, albeit impressive, are only unusual because he is an American. World class runners consistently have run similar times for years.

I agree with Drayne stop all the BSing and give Webb credit he's worked hard to come to this point. Those comments should be flagged. The one guy in sports who should be receiving negative comments is a cheating baseball player who is about to break a record he does not deserve!!!

Canadian Runner and Aussie Aussie seem to be letting patriotism cloud their judgement. Canadian Runner claims Webb had it easy (as if a 1:43 is ever easy)because he drafted off the pacer and then Reed who, not coincidentally, is Canadian. The video clearly shows Reed quickly jumped out to a 4-5 meter lead which would not allow Webb to draft. Aussie Aussie makes that all too common and never supported claim that Webb is juiced. I suppose it must make Mottram's loss to Webb earlier this season a little easier to take if you throw out silly accusations with no support. Be adult and give the man his due.

They ought to change the schedule for Webb like they did for Johnson in Atlanta.I think Alan can double successfully and possibly get a medal in both the 800 and 1500.he will get a medal at world's.Flocast should'nt even allow all those negative comments to be accepted.Has the man ever tested positive for***. 1:43.84 in the rain? Incredibly fast, considering the conditions. If I was a betting man, I'm putting my money on Webb to at least medal at the world championships. Hopefully, the final doesn't turn into a pedestrian paced, tactical race. I want to see everyone go full out...and may the best man win!

From the discussion here it's clear Webb can't win. He either has been a man who hasn't fulfilled his potential on the world stage or, when he does perform well, he is juiced. I wonder why some of you follow track at all and waste your time on these posts if you're going to accuse anyone who puts up a good time of taking drugs. Let WADA do the tests and let the real track fans enjoy the sport.

Oh please.. Webb ran a 3:53 in high school. I really don't believe he was juicing up back in High School. The dude is just filling his
potential. And remember we know so much more these days in terms of
training, nutrition and so forth so not every amazing performance is due to PEDs. Sad that it's come to this though. Every great performance is questioned.

It looked like Webb was giving up with 60-70m to go. Reed die the last 30m more than Webb came on. Hopefully this will be a lesson for to Webb to maintain his mental attention better in the later part of the race, because at the World Championships it's unlikely his competition will slow as Reed did. Webb will need to hang closer to win.
