How about Sage Canaday, maybe the youngest and only collegiate to qualify for the Trials with a marathon time, toughed out a 10th place at a hot weather race at Grandmas to get the B standard?

Great series, nice work. It's so cool to see how the "unknowns" qualified and how they are training. Everyone focuses on the big dogs, but these guys are what makes the trials such a cool race. Any chance you will be doing anything on the unknowns from the northeast? Casey and Pat Moulton, Nate Jenkins, or Matt Pelletier? Would love to see what these guys are up to in preparing for the trials...

Interview by Kevin Selby. When James Nielsen and Steve Sundell stepped to marathon starting lines last spring, neither had intentions of finishing. Sundell, an All-American out of Columbia who ran 28:28 for 10k on the track in 2007, was out to pace friends through Napa Valley's wine country. Nielsen went to Eugene as part of his preparation for a future marathon debut. Their results were similar: surprising marathon victories. Now they are training together for the Olympic Marathon Trials. James Nielsen runs for the Adidas Transports Racing Team and is a PhD candidate in electrical engineering at Stanford University. Steve Sundell works in administration for the Stanford University athletic department.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials in men's marathon will be held in New York City's Central Park on November 3, 2007. The top three finishers will qualify for the 2008 Bejing Olympic Games. Stories of race favorites will be told frequently leading up to the race. The majority of the field, however, exists without publicity and support and sees this race as the biggest of their running careers. Over 150 American men have earned the right to toe the line in New York, and significant sacrifice and quality training is occurring to prepare for this race. Flotrack will bring you the stories of these men and investigate how these qualifiers became and continue to be among America's best.
