However, the previous record of 2:54.29 – set by another American team of Andrew Valmon, Quincy Watts, Butch Reynolds and Johnson at the 1993 world championships in Stuttgart, Germany – will now stand. Pettigrew admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs from 1997 and has had all of his times invalidated since then. His relay team-mate, Young, was also banned for life for a second drugs violation in 2004, though he was eligible to run when the record was set. Recently Young also confessed to taking part in doping as early as January 1999
