I would offer is I was in the area and I was going on a road trip to Eugene but I am not. As others have already said, keep safety in mind and good luck!
There is also a website called Couch Surfers that people use to find a cheap place to stay. I was just in Europe and I met some girls in my hostel who had used it as a cheap alternative.
