- See Less -Sara Gorton Slattery grew up in Phoenix(Arizona), where she had an amazing high school career. Slattery qualified for the FootLocker National Championship three times. Sara was runner-up her sophomore and junior year, her senior she would not accept second place again and won the individual state championship in 1999. The Phoenix native decided to jump from the desert and head for the mountains of Boulder and the University of Colorado. Slattery hit the ground running her freshman year and became the first CU female freshman All-American when she finished 8th at the NCAA Championships. Slattery?s career has been plagued by injuries but when she is healthy she is one of the best in the nation and it was proven her senior year when she won the NCAA 10k when it was only her second attempt at that distance. The 10k championship was Slattery second NCAA individual championship; the first came in the indoor 5,000m in 2003. Slattery also won two NCAA XC team titles her freshman and senior year. Sara Slattery now Sara Gorton Slattery married former Colorado All-American runner Steve Slattery her senior year. Sara Slattery entered Colorado as one of the top 1500 meter recruits and left CU as the best 10,000 meter runner in the nation.
