Coach Greg Metcalf has been affiliated with the University of Washington since 1990, first as an athlete, then a coach. Coach Metcalf has been successful at both his endeavors. As an athlete Metcalf earned All-American honors and graduated with the fourth fastest steeplechase time in school history.

Metcalf's success continued when he started coaching for his alma mater in 1996. Metcalf's hard work came to fruition at the 2006 National championships in Sacramento where two of his athletes won individual crowns. Ryan Brown took the 800 meter gold and an hour later Amy Lia surprised the nation by kicking past the field to claim 1500 meter title. The success did not stop there. Washington came home from Sacramento with 19 All-American honors in 2006, which surpassed the previous record of 15 set in 2005.
