I think the interviewer's comment about the tv coverage was fair. Last year's coverage was so much better - it was much more equitably distributed between the men's and women's races. This year they just didn't seem too excited about the fact that this was probably the deepest elite men's marathon field ever and that for 20 miles they were on world record pace. I'm British and they thought the coverage was piss poor.

I think Terrence is doing a great job bringing Ryan along...doing London inbetween the trials and the Olympics was a risk (Beijing will be 4 marathons in 16 months) but they certainly got rewarding experience and a good motivator for taking that risk.
I do hope that Team Mahon/Hall take a breather after Beijing and opt out of a spring '09 marathon. It's rare that a top marathoner gets even 10 marathons at near form and at this rate Ryan will hit that before 2012.
Very impressive coach!

i love flotrack and the insight we get into how the best coaches and athletes think. but that comment about the tv coverage is way out of line. just because the US didn't have a top competitor in the women's race doesn't mean the tv coverage should be devoted to the men! if ryan wasn't running and deena was, i reckon we would have heard interview comments like "they kept showing the men's race". that is such a short-sighted not-though-out comment and kind of detracts from the whole interview. Terrence and Ryan are still awesome and should be applauded!

Thanks, But...   April 14, 2008 at 7:20pm
thanks for the interview, but let's get some good questions together before you get one of the best marathon coaches in the world on camera. the questions were kinda lame!

Well when an American station shows coverage of it, then you can show the American men and women all the time!eh?!

I agree with the mediocre comment, a 13:17 these days is far from being competitive on the world scene right now. Im not as knowledgable about Deena's career prior to marathons so I wont reply to that, but you have to realize that Ryan having potential to run faster than his 13:17 doesnt make him competitive on the world scene, being there with 200m left in 13:00 and faster races makes you competitive. so I feel that comment was fair.

Mediocre are you serious!!! omg get a clue, Ryan had a 13:15 for 5k in college, 2nd at ncaa xc, and ran a 13:17 5k for the trials. I wont even go into Deena-but she was working with Joe V. before him. He's a good coach, but you need great athlete to do something.

this guy's a genius. he's taken two runners who were mediocre at best on the world scene (Deena & Hall) and made them top-flight marathoners... impressive!
