Brian grew up 15 miles from me and was running at Saint Francis College whenever I was a high school runner. To say the least, as a high school, college, and post-college runner; Sell motivates me all the time to keep with it and train hard.

SheboyganRunner - if you are as tough and disciplined as sell then you could be that quality of a marathoner but very view people are tough enough probably more mentally to endure years of that kind of training. And thats not talent, its passion.

Brian Sell is an amazing runner... He ran a 10:06 two mile in high school and I ran a 10:09. So as long as I put on 160 miles a week, i can go to the Olympics...haha

No Way!

No need to get down on folks. Sell is a great runner, as are Hall and Ritz. Let's hope they all stay healthy and represent well in China. Gotta respect Sell's work ethic and tenacity. He sure stuck with it.

If nothing else, being able to handle 150ish miles a week is a talent. There are probably very few people in the world who can do that, and the fact that he can do it both mentally and physically is amazing.

Also, as far as his "talent" goes, an excerpt from the bottom of the interview of something Dathan Ritzenhein's said about Brian Sell's talent.

"'Luckily, those guys like myself and Meb [Keflezighi] and Alan [Culpepper]%u2014I don't want to say anything bad about [Brian Sell]%u2014but we have a lot more talent, probably, straight off the boards and maybe we don't have to run 160 miles a week to get to that same level. I really admire [Sell] and those guys who are doing that, because it doesn't come quite as easy for them."

Excerpt from down towards the bottom of this interview... http://www.eliterunning.com/features/24/

"...I was thinking about how in high school my 3,200 meter PR was 10:06. I started thinking about how I just ran 26 miles faster than I could run two miles in high school."

In response to

well...

I woudlnt say being the only Olympic marathon entrant with 2 sub 2:11 qualifying times is exactly what you'd call fading as he headed in to the trials.

should say:
talent plus hard work = 3rd place at OT trials
talant plus thinking you work hard = most good runners

Without a doubt, Sell is a very hard worker. Talk to any of his training mates and I bet they aall would talk about how tough he is. Given that, I'm sure they would also contest that he has a laod of talent. Talent hard work = 3rd place at OT trials. Talent thinking you work hard = most pretty good runners

Still   February 28, 2008 at 9:31am
he has a ton of talent, you can't deny that. You don't run a 2:11 with no talent. His high school training was terrible and he still went 4:28 in the mile. Plus his ability to handle so many miles is definetely a talent.

Well...   February 28, 2008 at 8:56am
i think rob is referring to the fact that sell did not break 10 in the 2 mile in high school... thats usually a pretty decent mark for high school athletes. He HAS worked very hard to be where he is now. He was basically a no-name until 2004 and then faded away until the olympic trials this year

Sick Of It.   February 28, 2008 at 8:52am
I am sick of people saying that Brian Sell has no talent and has just busted his ass. Although he has busted his ass (just like every other professional runner our there), obviously he was born with talent or he would not be there. Damn just becuase he didn't win footlocker or sign with Nike means he doesn't have talent?

Brian Sell proves that you don't have to be born with it, that you can work hard and develop everything you need to achieve your goals.
