Why Can't We Be Friends?   March 28, 2008 at 10:21am
can't we all just get along? Whys it got to be about cheering for only Webb, or only Lagat, or only Ritz. What's wrong with just team USA? This is the first time in many years we can show the world we're not just a sprinting country. now I've idolized Webb ever since I was in middle school so I am a little more for him to get the gold. But the big picture is Team USA!! Webb, Lagat, Hall, Ritz, Goucher, Tag. and we got the sprints, Gay, Wariner. This is our year, UAS' year!!
ok, change of subject, you guys remember that 5000 Meter movie back in 04, I think it would be cool if they made one like that on the 1500m. what do you guys think?

Racing?   March 28, 2008 at 9:41am
Legat won the 1500 and 5000 world champs last fall. No one cared about how fast the times were. It is not about times, it is about winning. It is all about who can win at the big show. Untill Webb can prove that he can race and win at the highest level and not some dinky meet in bumville, nowhere. I really hope he can but I still view him as unproved at the world class level. We should start talking about Matt Tek because damn...what an uprising. Wisco representing.

Real Runner   March 27, 2008 at 12:04pm
sorry I had so many grammatical errors in my last post, I really do apologize. You see "racing?" I'm in college and don't have time to sit around on the computer all day and do nothing, I actually have things to do, and sometimes I get home and am just a little tiered and don't always catch all my grammar mistakes. but back to the topic if running. Haile Gebrselassie is like 35 years old, and like I said runners don't become the best over night. Webb is only 24 or 25. and I'm not saying that Geb is not a good runner I think he's an amazing runner. I also think Ritz, Hall, and Lagat are amazing runners. But none of them have the range Webb has, They can't run 1:43 or 3:46, none of them can even run 27:34 although Rtiz is only like a second off that time but still, those are some major points for Webb. And when Lagat ran his 1500 PA he was around Alan's age, and it seems like Webb's times are still getting better in the 1500. But Lagat is doing awesome in the 5000, but when was the last time Webb ran a 5k? So Webb has some of the fastest times in the most events, because he has the fastest times, that makes him the best at these events. And when your the best that means no one can do it better then you. so Alan Webb is the best or at least clearly on his way to being the best runner in the world. You see "racing?" this is what we call Logic; you take a collection if information and look for patterns in the information then come up with a satisfactory conclusion. And sorry for my crude language, I'll try to tone it down in the future for people with sensitive ears.

wow "real runner"...judging from your literacy level...i will guess you are 13? "best runner in the world"? How do you judge that? by world titles? world records? Webb is 0-2 in that category. Haile Gebrselassie could be a good pick for that though, try expanding your horizon and google his name, you do know what google is or does your parents have a control lock on that site? Your right though...alan webb will "brake"...as will slow down. Im not quite flexible enough to put my head up my butt so i was fortunate to watch another inexperience race from alan webb. Legat handled traffic ok...twice actually. You know who Legat is? and what does "real runner" mean? what factors does a person have to do to achieve the status of a "real runner"?

Good Thought, But Not Really   March 23, 2008 at 12:01am
unfortunately you are correct, but you know what, this is the sport we have decided to love. hopefully you know that 'everyday people' do not do what we do (watch the wetmore interview from a while back....he says it the best), so why would you expect the everyday person to watch. the everyday person in the US also doesn't watch soccer and thats the biggest sport in the world and anything can happen at anytime. most people aren't brought up to run or play soccer in our country and furthermore, running is used as a punishment in these other sports especially in the younger years. i hate to say it, but running/track & field may never be at the level of these other sports.....but we can still try to make it as good as possible for those who do truely love and care about it. and that won't always be through "moves, attacks, kicks", etc...

Thats why running very rarely on TV. If you mean "please you" im sure you meant the public. What everyday person (that has no clue about running) will keep watching a track race where no one does anything? People enjoy watching basketball, football etc etc because the unexpected can happen at anytime. Football games are not decided an hour before the race.

Good Though, But Not Really   March 18, 2008 at 10:28pm
man....runners are running to win and for PRs (and some for money). they are not running to please you. everyone would like to see a dramatic race everytime out, but the sport isnt like that. some days you do what it takes to win and other days you run to drop your time. and more often then not, the olympics/world champs are a sit and kick race. the times are never that fast and thats part of the reason why the US never has a legit shot at medaling, we can't hang with those guys in a kickers race. also, the olympics are exciting because its once every 4 years......and the best racer always wins the race, thats why they win

I mean track is def coming back but it gets boring watching these races...there is no racing...nothing happens. We want to see moves, attacks, kicks...not pacing for 3 laps or 12 or 24 then a kick. Dont get me wrong because you still need a huge physical effort to roll 62's for 3miles. Thats why world champs and the olympics are exciting...because they are pure and the best racer wins...or at least makes it out of the prelims...sad sad

Alan is setting records which takes a huge physical effort! I have a hard time naming alan as one of my favorites though. I agree with Steve_x on the fact that these athletes arn't racing anymore...it's simply time trialing. Look at Ryan Hall's American record...now that was amazing! and unpaced...lead from the gun...or Ritz's 28:08 10k recordat Healthy Kidney...another RACE against Mottram...another unpaced record. and even Torres win this weekend. I believe these are our great american runners.

If Steve_x is an alias for Hicham El Guerrouj, I would say criticize all you want. However, since we all know it isn't, at least limit your criticism to when your comments are actually relevant to the video. If you want to make a case that he did race well at a race a year ago, post that comment on that specific video. Don't go slamming a dominant athlete because he got sick one time at the beginning of the year.

I agree, Alan Webb is an amazing athlete who is a BIG part of the American distance revival in the past few years and few take appreciation. I hate critics who harshly criticize those of world class caliber when the person throwing the dirt probably couldn't hang in for anything close to their first mile clip of 4:36. People have bad races, we all do or at least those of us who are dedicated to the sport. We are the ones putting in mile repeats and tempos at 6 AM, while you sit behind your monitor. And like somebody said don't say anything about Alan till you get on that high level of competition or in a world championship, Olympic Games, 5th Avenue Mile, NCAA Championship, XC championships etc....

He is a classy guy, I waited for 15 minutes and was last inline to talk to him. He was tired, sick and still had the time to talk to us. He did seem weaker than the other athletes I interviewed and it was obvious the food poisoning took a toll on him. Alan WILL do some damage this summer. The cribs show was on Youtube.

I've had the opportunity to meet Alan and he is a great guy. We all forget how young he still is. Most milers don't have his range. He can do anything from 800-10,000. I bet he can throw down a nasty 400 split if he wanted. Runners have ba races from time to time. He obviously didn't feel well today. It's also his first real race of the season. It takes time to get into race shape.

Nevertheless, you are overly critical. You are also, as you said, an armchair critic. Let's see you keep up with the first mile. If you can't do any better, what place do you have criticizing him the way you do? Have you been to the Olympics? Have you won a medal at any world-level championship? If not, then you have no place to criticize.

"will alan go for the record?" Flotrack sure seemed confident he would win.

"If you want to win the olympics you need to know how to race" Wow..i see everyone read what they wanted and not what I typed.

Steve, the guy has/had food poisoning...good god cut him a little slack. I dont think many of us really thought he was going to win, but that he could run well. Sheesh, he finished 16th in a great field while STOPPING to puke. Uhhhh...I'd take that.

What?   March 15, 2008 at 3:06pm
so, Steve, the reason he ran badly was not because he stopped to puke, but because of race tactics? Aren't arm chair critics supposed to be somewhat informed?

Steve_x   March 15, 2008 at 3:00pm
Not suprised. There are the athletes who know how to race then there are athletes who time trial behind 2 or 3 pacers. I know I am the arm chair critic but i believe im saying what everyone is thinking. If you want to win the olympics learn how to race, we know you can run fast we watched it. We also watch you lead too many laps at worlds and the let down at the 04 olympics. good luck alan.
