- See Less -Alan Webb jumped into the national scene in high school with his success at the Footlocker National Cross Country Championships and more notably with his success in the mile. He smashed Jim Ryun's HSR of 3:55.3 at the Prefontaine Classic with a time of 3:53.43. Webb is also the first high schooler ever to run a sub 4:00 mile indoors.
After a year of running at the University of Michigan, Webb turned pro and started running for Nike under high school coach, Scott Raczko. He broke the American Record in the Two Mile at Nike Prefontaine Classic in 2005 in 8:11.48. Webb has since broke Steve Scott's American Mile Record (3:47.69) in Brasschaat, Belgium in a time of 3:46.91 and has also racked up personal bests of 1:43.84 in the 800m and 3:30.54 in the 1500m.
Best of luck guy!
My guess is until this year, "time-trialing," not real championship racing was, in his heart of hearts, his number one priority. I suspect last year's American Record mile combined with this year's disappointments, have changed that for the better. In the future, he will have an excellent chance to become a real champion.
Since he doesn't have much innate racing tactical sense, at this point, the more races the better. And also just to keep the recent disappointments at bay. (He may or may not benefit from a coaching change. Sometimes change is good for its own sake and to prevent staleness; and that doesn't have to reflect poorly on his current coach who obviously has benefited him HUGELY. However, arguably staying with his current situation, within his comfort zone, and building on last year's successes is also reasonable; there is more than one way to skin a cat.)
I'll go so far as to say this year may be a blessing in disguise for him (though I don't expect him too see it that way anytime soon). And although consistency has never been his forte, he has clearly demonstrated the ability to rebound impressively from adversity.
He'll likely do well long-term and probably get his "hardware." And it will be MUCH more meaningful now when he does.
he's got a girl - http://track.flocasts.org/videos/coverage/view_video/97-2007-fifth-ave-mile/4937-alan-webb-and-julia-rudd
and he's got his own place - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFFMoXyD6Is
Hang in there- you are still one of the best in the world. How many runners can run a 3:46 mile and a 27:34 10K? Alan is a class act and I hope he bounces back with an AR in the mile this year. Go get 'em Alan!
Guys have good seasons and guys have bad seasons. It happens. Webb just happened to have a bad season at the wrong time. He is still young and has plenty of time to rebound.
2012 1500 - Manzano, Jennings, Webb.....you never know.
If it weren't for the solid relationship you've got with the runners, we'd never get this interview. Thanks Alan for the update...good luck in the 2nd half
Good luck with the rest of your season Alan
new coach???

i want to see you doing some PR's soon!
