"That Guy" is an idiot, Chelanga went around 13:45 5k in his 10k split when he broke the collegiate 10k record on the track, and your trying to compare him to chris derrick's 13:29 5k. And the thing about "just cus he is kenyan he trains alot," i think the others explained well enough to make u look really stupid.
Are you serious "That Guy"?
Chelanga beat him by 33 seconds, and your point about how "he has trained for a long time somewhere else" because he is kenyan is wrong, he has only been running for 4 years, he played ping pong before that. Derrick ran 13:29 on the track for 5k, Sammy's split 5k on a xc course was 14:09! And then he preceded to run another 14:30. And just because Derrick has ran fast all year and beat Sam at pre-nats doesnt mean crap, Sammy just knows how to peak at the right time. Dont try to put Chelanga down, he ran one of the most amazing races i have ever seen run. He absolutely dominated Chris Derrick on monday.
That Guy said: "..he (Chelanga) is Kenyan so how he has trained for a long time somewhere else makes the difference. If he was American that would be different.."
Your STEREOTYPICAL ASSUMPTION that Chelanga has trained for a long time somewhere else is MISGUIDED. Sam's FIRST SPORT WAS TABLE TENNIS. He DIDN'T START RUNNING until his LATE TEENS, whereas Chris Derrick has been running since he was in elementary school. If anybody has more UPSIDE POTENTIAL, IT'S SAM CHELANGA. Your assertion that Chris Derrick will keep improving while Chelanga has reached his potential is FATALLY FLAWED...SAM WILL WIN BY AN EVEN BIGGER MARGIN NEXT YEAR !!!!
If Chelanga does not get faster Chris Derrick is gonna beat that guy next year, Chris Derrick has run fast all year and you only have so many 8K's 10K's to make fast times, plus, no offense, he is Kenyan so how he has trained for a long time somewhere else makes the difference. If he was American that would be different, of course east africans can spank college kids in America, top 5 at World's Juniors ran under 23:00 and the course and temperature played a factor as well so him beating Derrick was expected. Chris Derrick is still the man regardless 13:29 5K says that loud and clear he has a bright future, a smooth calm runner not letting the pace or distance of a race affect him.
1:35 Of Pure Flotrack Goodness Yesterday at 3:22pm
Rob...Ryan pulled a heist to get those 95 seconds...next time you see him, you make sure to say thank you. Watch the video again...Sam was getting pulled off to the 'real media', drug testing, who knows...he IS the man and that's why it was hard to get his time !
a minute and 35 secs. You have got to be kidding me.This guy got second to Galen last year. He's arguably one of the best x-c runners in a long time, and thats all the time he gets.Unreal.
I predicted that Sam would dominate this race...He had a bad race at Pre-Nats and everybod jumped on the Chris Derrick bandwagon....Chris is a fine runner, but he is NOT in the same league as Sam Chelanga....Chris won Pre-Nats because Sam had a BAD DAY !!! JENNY BARRINGER'S EPIC MELTDOWN PROVES THAT EVEN THE BEST RUNNERS HAVE BAD DAYS
From Josh's interview and the USA Today interview with Chelanga, I believe that Sam was capable of and intended to win Pre-Nats but he zoned out and blew a huge lead.
Not only was this fuel for Sam's late season preparation, but it facilitated his break-away strategy today. McNeil considered going with him but because he folded at pre Nats, he hung with the pack.
I know it wasn't planned this way but his pre-Nats race was a brilliant set up for today
