The Gold Medal he won in the Marathon at the 1972 Olympic games is the last Gold medal won by a US male distance runner. Shorter followed his Gold in Munich with a Silver in the following Olympics in Montreal. During the seventies shorter dominated U.S. distance running with 13 national titles. One in the 5000, two in the marathon, four in cross-country and seven in the 10,000. Shorter retired a year after the 1976 Montreal Olympics, but has continued to be a pioneer for the sport of Track and Field. Today Shorter is a strong force in the fight against performance enhancing drugs, President Clinton and Shorter worked hand in hand to develop the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA).
