Hayward Field at the University of Oregon was the scene of a new collegiate record tonight, Saturday, May 9, as Coach Vin cut his best milers loose to run a 4 x mile relay. The U. of Michigan held the record until tonight, 16:04.54 set in 2005. Many of the 5,725 fans attending the meet were allowed onto the infield for the race. And you know how crazy those Oregon fans can get for something like this. So here's the team: Galen Rupp, Matt Centrowitz, Shadrack Biwott, and Andrew Wheating. The new collegiate record is 16:03.24. Oregon also ran Kosinski & Blood in the 800, speed work for the PAC-10's coming up next weekend. I can't wait!

Someone raised the question of whether Matt beat his dad's best time on this run. So I looked it up. At U. of Oregon, fastest ever 1500 is Joaquim Cruz, the 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist, 3:36.48. Matt's dad is #2 at Oregon, 3:36.70 in 1976. So Matt Jr. is #3 all-time at Oregon, just 22/100's behind ol' dad. Being an ol' dad myself, I'm still smiling. lol

This race should be remembered in the "Kick of the Week". Fans were looking for Garrett to probably pull this off. Maybe a few others. But Centro, at the bell, was in 7th place. He started his last lap kick early, with 300 to go. I'm thinking he'll fade at the end. Too early. Well everyone. Watch this redshirt freshman in Oregon yellow from the bell. 3:36! Are you kidding me? Making dad and sis proud there Centro!
(Lauren went 4:10PR in her 1500 just 15 minutes before Matt)

I am digging the multi-cam thing. Also that was one hell of a race! Gotta shout out to Peter van der Westhuizen (pronounced fon der Vesthayzen)! Also Centro ran like a boss the last 150.

I thought Centrowitz was destined for greatness after seeing him running 842 in 2 mile at nationals his senior year of high school. That was a great race. It used to be on Flotrack but I cant seem to find it.
