Wow!! how can so many peple be so harsh. American distance runners have made huge improvements this year. If I recall Ryan and Ritz finished exactly 10th and 11th last year at the Olympics and they didn't get railed like this. They both even stopped during the race to stretch to relieve cramps. So What gives with tearing up Kara.

To say she is nothing and overrated is pretty harsh also. Until this past spring Hall had never finished third or higher in any of his marathons and he's treated like a god in the American distance scene, and rightly so because he is pushing the envelope and taking the U.S. up a notch, just like Kara. Show some respect to the people who are actually living the dream.
9th and 10th actually, and i agree with everything you said. Hall and Goucher are really pushing the envelope for U.S. Marathoning, and i think Ritz will also be up there in the years to come!

Well, I definitely can sense some tension in her interview. I know she just finished a marathon and was throwing up and all, but she delayed having a baby for this race, and knowing this the disappointment was very evident to me. Kara's life (to me) parallels that of Mia Hamm, only of course a lot less well known. I personally think Kara has a lot of pressure being put on her by those around her and she won't reach her potential as a runner until she manages a way to manage or eliminate that pressure and be able to train and run more relaxed.

Victoria said it very well. Flotrack is a place to celebrate runners. Just because someone doesn't win does not mean they failed. Kara didn't make excuses, she simply didn't run as well as she thought she would. As runners we should all relate to that, we all have our days where we don't perform as well as we expect. I wish I was 10th in the World Championships on an off day! Great job Kara and keep up the hard work, you've got a long career ahead of you!

The marathon is the most inconsistent event. One little thing can throw you off. Kara is still inexperienced at this, but I hope she looks toward 5000s and 10,000s on the track. Her potential there and her speed are pretty good.

Kara, you're always a baller and I have the utmost respect for you!

Mark and Ryan, your coverage of Worlds has been wonderful; thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to the athletes.
To all those who are new to Flotrack and/or are posting negative comments:
This is a place to celebrate runners and track and field athletes, and a place to make friends and to follow those friends in competitions, interviews, workouts, etc. I think Mark and Ryan would back me up on this. This is not a place to be critical or to make inappopriate remarks. Like I wrote earlier, this is a place to celebrate our sport and its athletes. Now, those who have written that they have the right to write what they want-- that is true, but Mark and Ryan also have the right to delete your post. Let's celebrate how hard these athletes work and the great people that they are!!!

Ok guys, clearly she's a great runner. She's only run three marathons and is one of the best in the world. She deserves any credit she's given. And of course her husband is going to be standing right by her, she's about to pass out. They're both Nike athletes and elite runners, if they want pr they certainly don't have to sneak into flotrack interviews.

Be careful Mark, you're boarding on censorship. If someone states why they think this or that, it's their opinion, just like you have yours. If I say I love Kara and think she's amazing, that doesn't mean she is, it's just my opinion. Is someone else wrong if they say they don't like her? Everyone is guessing, and as long as it's not vicious and vindictive, I'd be very careful about alienating those who post here. If you want to favor Kara, then say so. If someone says something negative about Desi, you don't jump all over that, and I'm from Michigan. She talked about seeing stars, right? Some will define that as a load of you know what, but others will say that she's implying that it was a reason, aka excuse for her place and time. Again, you can screen my posts all you want, but I've got the right to my opinion, just as you do and everyone else who posts. The b.crew will NEVER make a negative comment towards her because they are biased. Kara, like you and me, is not above criticsim. Think about it.

David
Flotrack is Mark's brainchild so its his call. I don't think you should be taking an authoritative tone with him. Furthermore, it is an opinion, but it is not at all constructive. She didn't make some claim that she was a for sure winner, so why do you feel the need to bash her? No one comes to your work or school and calls you out, so cool it. By saying WE hate someone is totally misrepresentative.

More importantly, I think its awesome that Kara put herself up there. That's what happens when you go for broke. She raced for a medal, not for top 5. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. Looking forward to her next marathon.

She's seeing stars and throwing up because she's probably got a migraine headache. Very common with overexertion and also very debilitating. She'll probably be down and out for the rest of the day.
I hope she recovers well and gives herself a chance to rest. She's worked very hard all year.

The criticism here is pretty harsh. She clearly did not make any excuses, in fact, most of the interview was about how her training was better than ever. There is no shame in that, sometimes your best is worse than other people's. However, it does seem like all that has been made of the new training ethic of American distance runners simply is not enough to overcome the genetic advantages of the African runners.
The criticsim is pretty harsh?????? How so? She was 10th and no where near the gold. She is not the best in the world and has no chance to be. Yes, she's a decent half marathoner, so what? It's not a marathon and there's a big difference. I've broken 2:30 and have run 14 marathons to date. You can't simply take your half and double it and then add x amount of minutes. She will NEVER be on the medal stand in London, wanna bet? She is not in the class of the best marathoners and has NO FINISHING SPEED!!!!! Without it, she's got no chance. But, you will come back with some meaningless rhetoric to explain how I am wrong. She will be strongly challenged to make the team in 2012 and will not be a shoe in by any stretch of the imagination. A lot will happen in 2 years and she knows it. Alberto should have just let well enough alone. Too bad.

Um.....you know nothing about running, do you? After 3 marathons, she's overrated in the marathon, and it's not worth my effort to explain it to you. If you're tired of others opinions that don't agree with yours, then go elsewhere, this site doesn't need you. You're just tired of people not agreeing with YOU, RIGHT? You're not pretty sure of anything, you don't know anyone on this site, so then you are clueless, RIGHT?
I am tired of the bashing so we will delete your post bc opinions backed up with facts are OK here but bashing with no facts is lame and we dont want it here.

Yeah, he's gotta be in the picture at every moment, not off to the side. Sure, she might fall and he's there to catch her. How dumb are you people? No, she didn't JUST finish the race. Yeah sure, she just finished and flotrack ran up for an interview. I personally could care if Adam is in the video, but he is obviously standing behind her to be in the camera, not off to the side or next to her. LET IT GO yourself peabrain and no, I'm not the original poster of that comment. I'm just correcting your dumb comments about her just finishing the race.

Lets be honest here, she didn't make any excuses. She said she started throwing up, that others were better today, and that today wasn't her day. She handled herself well, and that was a great interview. I get so tired of all of the negativity on here. To say she "Just isn't that good" isn't even worth the argument. I am pretty sure if you stepped in the track, you would be seeing her back the whole time. She gave it her all, which today wasn't good enough. She is a great competitor, and that was a good interview.

I think she needs to focus on one race, NY, Boston and now Berlin. The workload may be just a bit too much and working with Salazar (the man who always over-trained) may be taking away from her performance on race day

Did Adam Run?   August 23 at 10:20am
She didnt make excuses, I think she handled it quite well. She finished. A lot of athletes might have dropped out. I admire that.
Why is Adam in background? If Adam was racing would Kara be lurking over his shoulder?

Agreed. Anyone with a competitive nature can recognize her desire to perform well in this interview. I would guess that the 'negative posters' on some of these threads don't have 1/10th the determination, and desire to excel as the likes of Kara Goucher, and most of the other elites interviewed here.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, some of those opinions just seem really petty and ignorant.

Sorry people, a lot of what Mike (?) says is true. She said she felt great during the interview. Bad food did not make her finish where she did. Some people are so gullible it is beyond shameful. How dumb! She got beat.

She's not that good!

Mrs. Excuse maker, period. She's not that good and is HIGHLY overrated. Her results proved it. She did her best and it wasn't good enough. Lots of people do well and throw up in the process. Being sick after or during a race doesn't mean Jack! Mike McGuire did it the last 100 yards of the Freep Marathon years ago, but he still won. I ran my pr and threw up 3 times during the race and right at the finish line, so what? Now it will be turned around that she was sick and that was the problem. Now all of the Karrogant fans can jump in and defend her. She won't win in London, you read it here first and she might even have a hard time making the team....yes, the US team. You'll see. Okay..............now attack me for being right.
