I think Kim is great and truly hope she throws herself into the mix in Berlin. It's what she needs to do and I hope she medals if she does.

Her comment that gals are better than guys at just going for it, that guys are "too scared" to go out hard by themselves probably came out wrong. Anyway, even if it's true I believe it misses a big point.
Women MAY in fact be better at soloing fast times but, really it is largely irrelevant. Men's races are deeper than women's distance races. It's just usually not an option for a world class man to take off on the field and solo. Bekele is the pinacle and look at how long it takes him to drop the challengers in his 5k's this year. I actually think that BECAUSE our top women are not in deep races as much as our men are, and as a result are too often racing on their own they are less able (or more "scared" to) run well in championship races where tactics are essential.

Kim Smith going for it in Berlin

August 14, 2009
Kim Smith has already raced at the World stage many times in her career. In 2007 Kim was 5th at the World Championships in Osaka. Last year in Beijing she finished 9th after entering the meet ranked 5th in the World. This year Kim says she's going for it, putting herself in position to medal. You don't have a chance if you don't put yourself in it. The women's 10k final is tomorrow evening in Berlin.

Watch Kim, Defar, Shalane, Amy, Katie and the rest of the world tomorrow night at 1:25pm EST on NBC. (TV Coverage starting at 1). The morning session will be live online at Universal Sports at 4:35am EST and 11:35am EST.
