Why would you write such negative comments? Ok .......I am not a distance runner but I do not write anything negative like "this is so boring in me" on distant videos. Just because flotrack started with distance runners, why dis this when they are trying to diversify their website into the WHOLE sport of track and field. If this is not your 'cup of tea' then leave the disrespecting comments to your self. Distant running might really be your passion and love, so pole vault, other field events, and multi events are the passion of others!

Yall should be ashamed of yourselves.. U would be suprised how many field event people use this site... Im a jumper and I PROUDLY use and LOVE this site. They post like 5 or 6 distance workouts in a row and I dont get on here and complain,,, but the second that they post ONE sprint or field event workout on here all of you distance runners get on here and complain. Thats just ignorant,,, (((This website IS NOT called FLOdistance either))),,,, its Flotrack and is ment to cover all events,,, all I ask is that yall be a little more tolerant and open minded about the other events... I love track and field as a whole and I like to see what is going on with and learning about some of the other events and the variety that is on here,, I even enjoy some of the distance workouts, and like I said Im a jumper... Keep up the good work Ryan yall are doing a great job...

The technicality of this event is mindboggling. There are so damn many things that have to go just right to get to a new level. Plus, the event requires speed, strength, agility, flexibility, coordination and timing. I am a distance runner, but have so much respect for vaulters. SO glad flotrack got this in here. More of these technical events, floguys. Forget the losers below. True fans of the sport are fans of every aspect of the sport.

One more thing. Chelsea is hhhhoooooootttttttttttttttt.

Some distance runners need to get over themselves. The site was not made to specifically cater to you and your interests. There are many aspects of the sport. I doubt many of those complaining have even attempted to pole vault. Do not devalue your fellow track and field athletes because you feel their event looks stupid or is unimportant.

Do you think your events are incredibly exciting to watch? "Oh great, another 10k. Let's watch as they run an oval 25 times not caring about anything but their splits. Runner A could probably pass runner B right now and you know, compete, but that would go against the plan."
No one likes for their event to be trivialized.

I agree completely with most of your post except this part. Not everyone can be a distance runner. Sure, the average person can last running for 5 or 10 kilometers without passing out, but that isn't the same thing. I offer this analogy based on your claim. A man who runs a 5k race in more than 20 minutes is the same as someone who runs it in less than 15. Similarly a runner like myself with no training at technique can throw the javelin 90 feet and is the same as a thrower who is over 200'. No, anyone can "run" distance, but not anyone can be a "distance runner"

I'm a distance guy but it was cool to see a vault workout and the talk on training and the whole piece on picking the poles and how their made, my HS had a good vault squad so it was cool to learn more. Although... It would've been cool if you stuck a small camera on a helmet or something haha that would've been difficult.
Maybe you guys could see if you can do a "How it's made" thing at one of the pole factories?

Nice workout!

Distance runners are the most selfish lot I've ever seen. You freak EVERY SINGLE time there is a non distance WOW! Let's not forget most of you are distance runners for a reason. You can't jump, you can't throw anything larger then a pebble, or lift your own body weight in any way shape or form thus eliminating the pole vault from your bag of things to do. If you could sprint or do anything else besides run for a long time without getting tired you would do it. Let's not forget ANYONE can be a distance runner and run a marathon, 10k, or 5k. Thousands of people do it every weekend. Get over yourselves and relax a bit. Besides, distance workouts are all pretty much the same. Everyone does the same thing at the same time of the year (base, threshhold, intervals, race). It's not rocket science.

I am a pole vaulter who initially signed up for the site, but lost interest because there wasn't much field event coverage. Having articles like this bring me back to flotrack and builds my appreciation for the whole community.

That being said- Chelsea Johnson is my favorite professional pole vaulter! She has a great competitive attitude and knows how to have a good time working on her craft. She is an inspiration to any young female athlete in that she is hard working and committed, but also has a healthy self image and concept.
Thanks for the inside look at everything that goes into her workouts. Through my years of vaulting I never had the feeling that I was in control of working on more than one specific aspect of the vault at a time. This video demonstrates the "next level" of pole vaulting. Thanks for getting into the details!!
Good luck Chelsea! Love Ya!

This was an awesome video. Chelsea is a stud and I can't wait to see her make the team in three weeks. This video goes to show how intricate an event like the vault is. Pole vault is the best combination of speed, strength, power, coordination, balance, stamina, endurance, flexibility, agility, and accuracy. Chelsea is one fit lady who has all of those characteristics in the bag. GO JOHNSON!!

PS- I think that it is fair to include events beyond distance stuff on this site. Many track fans don't go to meet just to watch people run, but have no choice but to to watch races because they obscure the view of the vault runway!

Some more tasty grooves I see.

What muscles are the most sore on a pole vaulter post-workout? I'd imagine the back and/or the abs.
Also, is her coach mic'ed?
Typically shoulders or low back. Depends on if she accomplished taking off on or out. If she took off under too much she could get sore in the low back and hamstrings.

Sounded like Jan was mic'ed.....but I have worked with him at many of his camps and he is loud enough to not be.
Great video...and yes more than one pole vaulter/PV Coach looks at this site!

I love track and FIELD. I don't care if you show Maurice Green dancing around in tights, or Jackie Joyner doing rollback farts to get ready for a workout. It's track and field man. I love every aspect of this stuff. When I was at NAU coach Mann always mixed up room assignments on the road so you would get to know your teammates in other events. Throwers and sprinters are way cool if you get to know them and hang out with them. You distance guys will find that they will respect you and root for you more if you get to know them and the work that they put into their events. So stop hatin on the non distance stuff. If you need it that much maybe you should go on a distance run and ponder ways to get more info on how to get better. They have books and websites that give you tons of info.

This video was great. I am a multievent athlete and I use this site to look up everything from running to field events. Its great to see all the technical aspects that go into pole vaulting and the training it takes to compete at an elite level. And yes it is true that Chelsea Johnson is the hottest thing to happen to San Luis Obispo since Alex Madonna started building on the area and put the best and most expensive lunch food in the county.

i don't get the people making a big deal out of one workout that isn't distance running. i like the change of pace seeing what a vaulter does in practice, you can only see so many distance workouts before they get repetitive and boring so it's good to mix things up a bit. would you really prefer to watch repeat 400s every single week?

Great workout! As a distance runner I never get to see what goes on with the jumpers, throwers, or sprinters, so it's nice to see how they train. Definitely worth the watch.
