Symmonds attended Willamette University, a Division III school. While at Willamette, Symmonds owned the track; he won seven national titles. Though Symmonds was relatively unknown heading into the 2006 US championships, that did not discourage him. To earn his successful finish of second in the nation for the 800 meter, Nick passed a pack of five runners during the last 150 meters. Now Nick?s route to championship has broken the mold for others to follow.
