There's got to be a corporation out there that can through a measly 250k towards our olympic distance running future.

It is a shame, but the Center was losing money and when the state of AZ is in a budget crunch, it is hard to justify losing $250K per year (according to one report I saw). It is beautiful place (winters can be a bit harsh) with excellent facilities for a lot of sports.

Jack Daniels has done more than taken any one "runner to the top". He spends his time helping younger runners who usually don't have a solid background in running and develops them to race against the greatest. Jack Daniels has the ability to comprehend the dynamics of preparing for a race and he shares it with runners. Sometimes that alone make them great.

vdot and altitude training? hahaha. daniels did none of this original work. please check the ex. phys. literature. he has taken no runner to the top, and has in fact been fired by many top runners becasue his methods do not produce medals. he may be a hit in cortland. . .but all of his techniques were being used way before he borrowed them.

please, any artist will tell you there is no such thing as an original idea. daniels wrote down a few things that runners - me included - have been doing since the 70's.
jack has gotten himself into a little daliance trouble as well, many know the story, sounds like he did it again. . .

its not necessarily who he took from decent to great that matters. Its that he's had such an impact on the sport. The idea's of VDOT, quick leg turnover and altitude training were all brought to the fore front by this man. He has worked with athletes like jim ryun and joan benoit. There is a reason everyone from bernard lagat, abdi abdirahman, paula radcliffe and anthony famiglietti come to flagstaff to train and be supervised by Jack.

"i'm sure he isn't going hungry"

That's not the point. The man is a walking legend, one of the best that running has to offer. In most other sports a man with his credentials would most likely have money coming out of his ears.

It's a damn shame for the athletes--where's a bailout from Nike?--but for Jack, while I feel for him, he's in the same crappy position as millions of other Americans. And it's happening to him at an age where retirement should not be a four-letter word, unlike a lot of people who are losing jobs in their 30's and 40's while trying to raise children. The altitude training will continue in some way shape or form, and Jack will be absolutely fine.

Judging from the syntax and punctuation in Egun's comment I believe he intended to say "underrated," but I would hazard a guess that English isn't his first language or he is young.

Jack, we all support you. You have done so much for this sport. If you have an idea as to how the center could be saved, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem getting support from this community!

Please don't comment on him being overrated unless you have taken the time to get to know him and see what a vast amount of knowledge he has. Vin Lananna uses his work, Gags used his work, and MANY, MANY great coaches use his work. He is a great coach and a better person. Thanks Jack - from someone who actually knows you and what you have given all of us.

Email Tom (Exec. Director of USATF) at or http://www.linkedin.com/pub/8/735/766

Tom
I am a fellow runner. I saw that the High Performance Training Center (HPTC) in Flagstaff was closing: http://www.flotrack.org/videos/coverage/view_video/234422/150099-jack-on-altitude-center .
This means that Hall-of-Fame Coach Jack Daniels will be out of a job. The USATF has a program that funds HPTC shown here: http://www.usatf.org/about/leadership/project30.pdf .

I was hoping you'd know who to forward this email to so that Flagstaff can be saved.

you are kidding about the 'over rated' part right? He will blow your mind when it comes to running. He has been doing this for decades.

You know the economy is bad when the "world best" coach is unemployed.
I guess this could lead to better opportunities though.
Good luck Dr. Daniels and thanks for all you've done for the sport.

Jack Daniels

Jack on the Altitude Center

April 3, 2009
Jack Daniels has been negatively affected as many other Americans out there during this down time in the economy. The High Altitude Training Center in Flagstaff has been shut down for now. Jack will be taken care of through June but then has no idea where things may go. It is sad to see that such a great coach and influence in our sport can be "put out on the streets". Hopefully an outside source will maybe be able to help in some way.

Is this an example of the type of programs that the USATF is looking to put money towards?
