Abdi Abdirahman, Somalian-born and raised distance runner, stormed the States, packing 130 pounds of sheer determination and drive. The three-time USA 10,000m champion (2001, 2005, 2007), two-time USA 10,000m runner-up (2002, 2004) and 2005 USA 10-mile champion has plenty to be proud of and plenty more to strive for.
The Nike repping distance runner attended Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona in 1996 where he ran full steam ahead to claim the title of Arizona State Junior College champion – twice. Abdirahman then won his first two collegiate races at the University of Arizona, the Jammin’ Invitational (24:28) and the Aztec Invitational (25:28). With his stellar record, he swept Pac-10’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year award in 1998.
In 2006, Abdirahman crossed the Chicago Marathon fourth with a personal best time, 2:08.56. Abdirahman placed 14th at the New York City Marathon in 2004 and was Olympic Trial runner-up in the 10,000m, qualifying him to compete as an Olympic athlete in the 2004 games, where he placed 15th in the world at 28:26.26.
i know this has already been responded to, but comon Jon, he's probably doing the best, along w/ Mason McHenry (with Ryan Prentice in tow) of any WA distance athlete in the last 5 years.
Also, hasn't UW's Bywater (Lake Stevens WA) been just about as impressive as Prentice?
So only Mary was actually part of the Christian religion because she is the only one without sin?? And everyone else even the popes just considered themselves part of it?? I dont understand your logic...
Also, Islam is not as laxed as Christianity is in terms of how closely you have to follow the religion. For example, you can't go to heaven simply by professing to Allah that there is only one God and that that God is Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger (contrasting to the accepting Jesus as your savior in Christianity). You must also do all the necessary "works" that define a Muslim i.e pray 5 times a day, practice abstinance until marriage and abstain from alcohol indulgence to name a few. Apologize for the religious crash course but its necessary to get my point across.
considering yourself as part of a religion and being a part of a religion can be completely different things. Know it all was saying that he may consider himself a muslim, but by his actions he shows he is not.
true statement. he's ran some stellar times in HS but hasnt done too much yet. i think he's a soph though in college not a freshman
kinda a off question but how tall is abdi?
I'm 5'11" and a half. He's alot shorter than me. So I guess about 5"8".
His USATF Bio says 5'11" - but I think that's inflated like the heights and weights on a football roster.
You know who else trains with them? Abdi Hassan, only a RS freshman from UA who is doing big things this year. Expect great things from him as the season progresses.
Abdi will most likely tell you that he is Muslim if you ask him though his actions may not back up that statement. For example, the Islamic religion does not allow the consumption of alcohol. Any individual who follows distance running even a little closely will tell you that Abdi likes to have a good time and will go to great lengths to do so... including consuming alcohol.
