In my comment below, a word was censored out of my explanation of Basquiat's tag. "Samo" was an abbreviation of "same old sh-t," with an "i" in place of the hyphen. Did that make it through?

Nice to see this right after watching a video of Fam holding off Tim Nelson and sprinting away to win the Gate River Run 15K this past weekend—looks like the training plan's working.

Fam's a serious artist (painter) and consistently considers what he's giving to others with what he does. He gives an example of how such an attitude can be more than a pose for a pro runner when he says in this interview that he'd like to pace other runners to help them have a great race.
The tattoo on his arm is a clue to this aspect of his thinking. It reads “Plush/Safe He Think—Samo.” (Samo was the graffiti "tag" of the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat; it's an abbreviation of "same old .") Here's Fam's explanation:
"I'm a big fan of Basquiat. He was a fantastic painter, but also an artist and poet with great insight into life in American society. My tattoo is taken from graffiti he used to tag around Soho in New York City in the early ’80s under the name Samo. The meaning is open to individual interpretation.
For me, it has to do with American ideals and the current contemporary mindset. Success these days seems to be measured in dollars and cents. Great emphasis is put on material wealth and lifestyle. For instance, when people ask me what I do for a career, and I tell them I'm an athlete, the first question out of their mouths is, “How much money do you make?” Too often on television the ideal image is of someone driving a Rolls Royce, covered in diamonds, getting into exclusive parties, signing autographs and then returning home to their mansion by the lake, impervious to everything. “Plush/Safe He Think” is something of a commentary on that: You may have the Rolls, you may have the diamonds and even the house, but if that mansion is in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina can flood that lake and take it all back. You'll have nothing; you're left with who you are. How do you measure your success then?

Fam is a great guy. It's always fun to see a guy run a variety of events. Fam has not only run a lot of events, but he's run quite well at a lot of distances.

Good luck in 2009, Fam.

I wish this interview was in front of a fountain, like the famous one in Vegas.
I think Fam majored in Asian Studies and Supply Chain Mgmt, in fact. I saw someone asked that, and I happened to know the answer. I know other stuff, so just ask.

I like the way Fam puts definite ownership on his training, and he's not intimidated by Jack Daniels. He doesn't just do what Jack tells him, he gets his voice in there. This is the second interview where we have seen that.

MikeyB, How do you not like the steeple? Its the baddest event in track. Its fast, agressive, and has water pits! Furthermore, with the way the Kenyans completely weiner slap the rest of the world, its got mystique.

I'm just saying keep it real. . . to act like he's just running to somehow help other people isn't, well, very real. And isn't that kinda his thing?

Motivation to run can come in a variety of forms. Sure it can come from personal achievement at first but what keeps you motivated when things get tough can come from teammates, coaches, family, and anyone else who supports you. After a while not only do you compete for yourself and for personal achievement but for everybody who has supported you along the way. Don't give Fam that Bologna he a good person running for the right reasons. NOOB!

Oh come on. Not running for personal achievement? At least be honest with yourself. Because you arn't fooling anyone with statements like that except maybe yourself. You are a professional runner for goodness sake!
