The Men's 5k at the US Championships in Eugene brought some excitement to the stands with names like Tegenkamp, Solinsky, Jager, Riley, Fam, Fernandez, Asmerom, Quigley, and more all fighting for only three spots on the US World Championship Team. With Fam throwing spontaneous surges throughout the race it came down to a final 400 that finished in something crazy, around 53 seconds, and we saw Jerry Schumacher send three guys to Berlin! Throw in Bolota who finished fourth in the US Champs AGAIN and a new American Junior Record by German Fernandez (13:25), this was a race that many anticipated all season.

Only one year after he graduated from Wisconsin, Tegenkamp rose to the top of US distance running. After years of battling injuries, the 2006 season was a dream season for Tegenkamp as he was finally able to put in consistent training. Persistent dedication combined with lessons learned during the Wisconsin years paid off big time in 2006; Tegenkamp opened eyes not only stateside, but all over the globe. After his 13:04 for the 5,000m in Stockholm, Tegenkamp can almost taste a sub-13 minute 5,000m. He also achieved his best 3,000m finish with a 7:34?..all of these during the summer of 2006. |

Later on that season, Fernandez broke Derrick's record. As you can see, he now holds the American Record.
