It's German, as in someone from Germany. That's how he pronounces it ... probably because everyone called him that growing up.

Plantaris is actually a muscle, not a ligament. Small postural muscle, often mistaken for a nerve in anatomy classes because the tendon is so thin.

German Fernandez looks back on XC

February 6, 2009
German took some time to talk with us about this past cross country season and his injury. German will run at the USA XC Junior Championships this weekend in Maryland. With the freshman class this year in the NCAA, the USA has a chance to send one of the greatest Junior teams ever to the World Championships.
