German is hands down the best of the class, and has gone down as an all timer, one of the best high schoolers ALL TIME. He proved himself to easily be better than everyone else at NON, and if everything goes well, he will prove himself to be the best at xc and everything else. Finnerty is nowhere near German, and will probably be nowhere near German during cross country or track next year. Michael Bolland, your comments just make me realize what an idiot you are denying the straight up facts that German easily beat Finnerty and by a lot. Finnerty and no other high schooler in that race were going to run 8:34, or anywhere near it. reply

#69	Omg August 3, 2008 at 7:29pm german ran the 4:00.29 1600m equaling a 4:01.60 mile and rob did run the 4:01.09 so technically he is a better "miler" but we wil never know... until college season reply

If anyone of the people here on flotrack knew Rob Finnerty personally they would know for a fact that he's going to be the best on the Wisconsin team by the end of the year. He's going to do the same thing that Hassan Mead did and beat whoever Wisconsin's Chris Rombough is. Even If Rob doesn't become the top Wisconsin runner I gurantee you.GURANTEE you that he'll beat German in this upcoming CC season. German is a great runner. #65	Relax July 21, 2008 at 6:40pm "He would've easily beat German" That might be the funniest thing I have ever heard....do you know how much German has been injured in his career? He pretty much was injured his entire Junior season and was just barely racing at the end. His coach has said that he coached German really conservatively this year because of his Achilles injuries, look what he has done off of conservative trainig...Sure Rob Finnerty is really really really good...but German Fernandez is off the charts. A 4:00/8:34 double is not someone who is going to be "easily beat"....come on now, give German the respect he deserves and I'm sure Finnerty will get it as well, its not like a 4:01 goes un-noticed. reply

ROB, IF HE WASN'T INJURED THE WHOLE WINTER THEN HE WOULDVE BEEN TRAINING IN THE DROP DEAD FREEZING COLD. and he would've done it too. #62	Michael Bolland July 1, 2008 at 10:06pm Rob will be wayyy better than German. He had absolutely no training coming into the season. He was out for basically the whole winter with tendonitis in his calf. Rob's battled injuries his whole highschool career and finally has put in two full seasons in track and XC. If you watched him do the grueling workouts that he does like I have you would see how amazing he is. German is a great runner but I will die arguing about how rob is better. reply

#47	Comment June 7, 2008 at 7:58pm Wide lens--it's not getting carried away, it is recognizing an 4:00/8:34 for its historical accomplishment!!! i'm sorry but whether he gets nelson's record or not is just details compared to what he actually has accomplished already and to downplay it is crazy. the fact that distance fan is talking about a "renaissance" is exactly due to the point you make about perspective...thus a revival of an activity or interest...as in, the 70s/early 80s represent a pinnacle in US running we are all hoping to reach again and go beyond. distance fan, i agree with you. US distance running has had some nice success in recent years. i don't know why anyone who (apparently) loves running would want to tone down your enthusiasm. kinda like when you are happy and want others to be happy and someone says: stop smiling! reply

I believe for Chris Derrick to run 8:35 in the 3200 at NON, reality would have to be different. For whatever reasons sub 8:40s is reserved for very very few high school runners. And that is reality. reply

Im not saying that Derrick could beat German, but he could definitely push German to his full potential. While German is a great runner, we never truly got to see Derrick run a 3200 with competition. I believe that if Derrick was going to NON, German would win in a 8:33 and Derrick would be right behind in a 8:35. reply

Sac and his event is the steeple just wait til the trials... reply

Our top HSers are matching the top HSers of the late seventies and early 80s, but the depth seems to be a LOT better. German's double is the best US HS double by far, but once he breaks Nelson's record we can all celebrate a record many thought would last a lot longer. But while US HSers are doing great things, lets not get carried away with German's place in world running at this point. reply

Bio:	After a few standout performaces as an underclassmen in high school, German came to prominence in his senior year when he broke Marc Davis' course record by 14 seconds at the 2007 CIF Cross Country State… + See More + After a few standout performaces as an underclassmen in high school, German came to prominence in his senior year when he broke Marc Davis' course record by 14 seconds at the 2007 CIF Cross Country State… + See More - See Less - After a few standout performaces as an underclassmen in high school, German came to prominence in his senior year when he broke Marc Davis' course record by 14 seconds at the 2007 CIF Cross Country State meet. He then won the Foot Locker West Regional and placed third at the finals. A few months later he won US Junior Nationals in Corss Country and earned a trip to the World XC Champs where he lead Team USA with a 25th place finish. At the end of 2009, German was named to the ESPN Rise All-Decade Team as one of the best 7 HS XC runners from 2000-2009. In track, he really turned heads with two amazing performances. At the CIF State Meet, German ran 4:00.29 to break Ryan Hall's meet record and then came back 3 hours later to win the 3,200m in a blistering 8:34.23. This is widely considered the best HS distance double of all time. A few weeks later he broke Jeff Nelson's HS Two Mile record at the Nike Outdoor Championships, winning in 8:34.40. He also borke Galen Rupp's 3,000m HSR running an en-route 7:59.82. As a freshman at Oklahoma State, German won the Big 12 Cross Country title, but a mid-race injury left him a disappointing DNF. He came back strong in indoor track by breaking the World Indoor Junior mile record twice, with 3:55.02 being his fastest. That time is also an NCAA record. He skipped the NCAA Championships to focus on the World Cross Country Championships after he defended his US Junior Cross Country title. At Junior Worlds, he lead Team USA with an 11th place finish. During outdoor track, German won his first NCAA title, winning the 1,500m in 3:39.00. At the USA Championships, German broke Chris Derrick's weeks old US Junior 5,000m record when he placed 5th in the nation with a 13:25.46. He was a finalist for the first ever Bowerman Award for his stellar freshman year on the track. During his sophomore season, German struggled with injury, but still helped his team win Big 12, Mid-West Regional, and NCAA National team titles.
