Doug Clark and current Kansas head track and field coach Stanley Redwine have worked together for almost 20 years and three different schools. Clark moved to Fayetteville to train 1988 Olympic trials under legendary coach John McDonnell. While at Arkansas Clack found himself helping out the coaching staff and soon realized his love for coaching. In 1994 Clark took over the distance program at UTEP, where he guided Jim Svenoy to the NCAA championship in the steeple and a runner up finish in the 3k indoors. Clark?s stay at UTEP was short lived because his good friend and fellow coach Stanley Redwine became the head coach at Tulsa and offered him the distance job. While at Tulsa Clark gave the school their first track All-American when Dwight Davis earned the award in the mile. In 2000 Clark followed Redwine to Kansas and he has taken the Jayhawks from the bottom of their conference to a regular at the national meet. Since taken over distance duty in Lawrence Clark returned Kansas the NCAA meet in 2005 and had their best finish since 1989. In 2005 Kansas finished a surprising 12th and then in 2006 they proved it was no fluke by finishing 20th even though their third man dropped out. Clark has coached 10 All-Americans and guided Kansas Alum Charlie Gruber to the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Gruber, Clark?s most celebrated athlete was ranked 2nd in the US in 2004 and 36th in the world. Gruber also won the USA 4k cross country championship in 2004.
