He has consistently worked with the Mizzou Tigers in various capacities since 1990 when he competed as a student athlete. Looking back to his own days as a team member, one can see that Jared thoroughly combined determined spirit with diligent practice and he earned 4 All-American awards, was a 3 time team captain, a Big Eight champion in the 800 m as well as making the mark with several wins at Drake, Kansas and Florida relays. At present Jared is the men?s Assistant Distance Coach in addition to working with the cross country program.
His impact on the men?s program has been reflected in caliber of athletes gaining national attention in both the middle distance and distance categories; he has coached nine All-Americans and six Big 12 Conference champions. In addition, Wilmes coached former Tiger Derrick Peterson as he attained a place on the 2004 Olympic team. Then in 2005, he guided both Derrick Peterson and another former Tiger, Timothy Dunne to qualify for finals at the USATF National Championship. Other Coach Wilmes success is reflected in steady performance improvements by the cross country team.
Jared truly keeps on doing what he knows works; the University of Missouri has improved stats to show as proof. His consistency is even reflected in family life as he shares a zest for the Tigers with his wife Rebecca Davis Wilmes who is also on the coaching staff. |
