Robert Chapman
Running Economy TestMay 22, 2009 Robert Gary, coach of Brian Olinger, Rob Myers, Dan Huling and The Ohio State University contacted Team Indiana Elite coach Robert Chapman. His athletes were going to try altitude training for the first time and he wanted to measure the benefits. Before the guys left for their month long training stint in the Park City, Utah area they stopped in Bloomington to meet with Chapman. They took part in tests such as running economy, VO2 Max and lactate threshold. Upon returning to Columbus, they went back down to Chapman to see how their bodies responded to the altitude. We were on hand to see some of the findings....

While Chapman was at Indiana University the Hoosiers achieved NCAA… + See More - See Less -Robert Chapman's propensity for understanding the chemistry of successful training is something that he brings to his coaching style. While Chapman was at Indiana University the Hoosiers achieved NCAA Championships, All-American Honors, All-Big 10 Honors---when he became Head Coach in 1998, the Hoosiers have had 16 All-Americans and 61 runners in the NCAA meets. In Coach Chapman's world, these successes do not evolve serendipitously; he has methodically researched the science of running; he started with degree in secondary education-chemistry in 1991, he earned his master's in exercise physiology in 1992, followed by a Ph.D. in human performance and exercise physiology in 1996. He then went on as research fellow for the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine where he coordinated a USATF and Olympic Committee project on 'live high-train low' altitude training model. His work on limits of distance running performance with a recruited group of elite runners is respected as clearly defining how top world athletes train. In addition to being a respected resource and author, Coach Chapman has made the chemistry of successful running a reality. Coach Chapman coached the Jefferson twins, Sean and John, and Stephen Haas to multiple All-American Awards and one national title. Currently Coach Chapman is coaching a post collegiate group in Bloomington, called Team Indiana Elite. The group is presently sponsored by Brooks. |

The video quality is great.
He makes those 5min pieces look easy -- beautiful, relaxed stride.
Great stuff.

what do "strings holding up the tubes" have anything to do with anything? it doesn't affect results, so why should that matter? those guys aren't there to aesthetically impress anyone...which is probably a big reason they are into distance running in the first place!! Running economy is running economy, VO2max is VO2max. The equipment won't change until there is a direct method, or easier method of measuring oxygen consumption at maximal exercise.
So yes Fred, that was a stupid comment.
"running economy is running running economy, VO2max is VO2max" does not seem any more brilliant of a comment.

Please use High Resolution videos more often, this was awesome! I can't wait for the VO2 Max video. (Is a lactate threshold video following as well?)
That is how I got it to work
*Correction, the low-res video is not posted below, but will be shortly.

would be hard to make jugement on single test so many factors come in to play in addition to those in video. i.e. training the day before sleep night before, training two days before, sleep two days before, changes in diet, what time of day was the test done etc etc. etc
Can you embed these H264s?
Chapman would be someone great to learn from too, those athletes are fortunate to have him as a coach.
I liked his point about athletes going to altitude during the summer (and even though the red blood cell count isn't "higher") by the time conference/nationals come around they were able to train at a higher load leading up to those important meets.
Which also could be an arguement for why lifetime bans on dopers and cheaters should be considered.
