Wow, that was awesome all around.
The video quality is great.
He makes those 5min pieces look easy -- beautiful, relaxed stride.
Great stuff.

So yes Fred, that was a stupid comment.
Note that I did not say that this was good nor bad. Just said that exercise phys equipment looked the same as it did 30 yrs ago.

"running economy is running running economy, VO2max is VO2max" does not seem any more brilliant of a comment.

The equipment has changed. Newer models only have a small wire running from the metabolic cart to the athlete making the process less cumbersome. They do have to have to wear an anteater mask which may be more uncomfortable for some individuals. To be honest, their equipment is a lot nicer than other labs that still use the large tubing with the full headgear.

The only reason all of those clowns said that it doesn't work is because you said "if you have any trouble viewing it let us know."

Please use High Resolution videos more often, this was awesome! I can't wait for the VO2 Max video. (Is a lactate threshold video following as well?)

Everyone below who is saying it does not work. Scroll down a bit and see the low-res version. The one above only plays if you have the new player, Flash Version 10. If you would like to see the one posted above, head over to Adobe.com and search for the Flash Player update.

*Correction, the low-res video is not posted below, but will be shortly.

wow looks like exphys has not changed in 30 years... equipment looks identical to the testing that they did back in 1970 or so on shorter, pre etc. down in TX still using strings to hold up the tubes.

would be hard to make jugement on single test so many factors come in to play in addition to those in video. i.e. training the day before sleep night before, training two days before, sleep two days before, changes in diet, what time of day was the test done etc etc. etc

Hey Dan, when someone gets faster than about 6 min per mile pace (although the exact speed differs from person to person) the feet naturally land mid to front foot because it is the most efficient stride. Landing on a heel causes the foot to spend more time on the ground and is less efficient.

This is a great video and postings Ryan and Mark.

Chapman would be someone great to learn from too, those athletes are fortunate to have him as a coach.
I liked his point about athletes going to altitude during the summer (and even though the red blood cell count isn't "higher") by the time conference/nationals come around they were able to train at a higher load leading up to those important meets.
Which also could be an arguement for why lifetime bans on dopers and cheaters should be considered.

Testing is always cool but really isn't necessary. How the athlete feels before and after and training/race times are more indicative than tests in the lab.

you measure the improvements based on multiple tests, not just one. it is a combination of lactate threshold, running economy, and vo2 max. you'll be able to see his vo2 max test in the near future.

This is random, and maybe ryan you can slow down the vid on your computer to answer this, but does Brian ever heel strike or does he only run on his toes (this could also just be a reaction to having to stay so close to the front of the treadmill.

Robert Chapman

Running Economy Test

May 22, 2009
Robert Gary, coach of Brian Olinger, Rob Myers, Dan Huling and The Ohio State University contacted Team Indiana Elite coach Robert Chapman. His athletes were going to try altitude training for the first time and he wanted to measure the benefits. Before the guys left for their month long training stint in the Park City, Utah area they stopped in Bloomington to meet with Chapman. They took part in tests such as running economy, VO2 Max and lactate threshold. Upon returning to Columbus, they went back down to Chapman to see how their bodies responded to the altitude. We were on hand to see some of the findings....
