Smile? I wonder if his Parkinson's causes him not to.

He was my hero (being a New Zealander myself). I saw him run around 5 times at the track, but that was when he was in his early to late 30's - past his best. I was there when he ran his 100th 4 minute mile. His 2000m world record was equivalent to a 3m 47s mile -back in 1976! Alan Webb has only run faster than that once, last year.

Great to see John Walker again, as a kid growing up in the 70s he gave NZ pride around the World,he was one of the greatest and helped the athletics boom in NZ.The Commonwealth 1500 race between Bayi and he was stunning.I wish him all the best.

That is one of the offices in our Equestrian Shop in New Market, Auckland, definately not a Medical- Treatment facility, dad works full time. Thanks for the kind comments about him though, i will be sure to pass them on.

Good interview I was wondering if you could put the sub 3:50 mile record in Gothenburg onto youtube. Also more of the 1962 commonwealth games e.g. 100 and 220 yards, Thanks

Excellent the 5th time through..I remember in his biography something about him jumping into a marathon for a workout, and being way out ahead of the leader and dropping out at about 21 miles or so with plenty left and the winner won with a time (I wanna say) like 2:18.......Had he raced the longer distances alot, his range would have been incredible...

I watched John at the 74 Commonwealth games, can't believe it is 34 years ago this Feb!, I'll never forget the stand swaying (I was seated on the back straight) as everyone stood to scream him on! I to had the same experience as the previous poster. He stopped and talked to me a couple of times when I approached him as a young lad.

Classy guy in every respect.

John was my idol as a young kid running track, I met him 3 times I think it was and he always took the time to stop and talk.Pretty cool for a young kid inthe 70's!.Brilliant runner and a man to be admired for many reasons He lost some of his best running years to injury, kind of like Ali and boxing.I wish someone would post the documentart of John and Rod and Dick on You Tube.I think TVNZ made it in 1976 or 77.

Thanks for all the exciting performances John!, I hope your health is holding up.

I'm saddened because this looks like a medical-treatment facility of some kind, and we know Mr. Walker is ill. Re: size; maybe Walker and Scott and Ovett were big, but few are bettering their times today. They ran long distance in training at quality speed.

John Walker - was always my childhood hero, I still have a poster from 1977 (when I was 6) of him and Rod Dixon running in Auckland's Cornwall park. Legend.

Without a doubt, Walker was the best miler in the world from 1975-77 (at least until the 1977 World Cup.). He is clearly a legend in the sport. In my view, he is one of the top 6 milers of all time. However, I seriously doubt the accuracy of the courses he mentioned in this clip (half-marathon - 60 minutes; 10k. - 27:30). Perhaps were training runs. He never ran even close to these times on certified courses. It should be noted that 27:30 would have been faster than the world record until Rono ran 27:22 in 1978. The current N.Z. record for 10,000 meters is 27:41.9 (Quax-1977)

John Walker is the man period.Without a doubt in his era and time no one could touch him. Great interview. He tells it like it is.You can be a world record holder but if you can't win off a slow pace when everyone else starts to kick over the last 400 meters it does'nt mean anything. If the Patriots don't win the superbowl all those games won't mean the same.Sure they will make history, but you have got to win the big one.

Great interview, and I hope that Nick Willis takes that to heart. It isn't college anymore, he can't sit that far back in big time races AKA world champs, olympics and try to just out kick from that far back he is gonna have to be up there in the top pack in order to be a factor. That is why I think he should be a miler instead of a 800m guy. He might be able to handle going out quick as hell but we haven't seen it yet. He should really look at the 1500m a little more cause if he can just sit for 3 laps or so and then burn that huge kick he has for 300m he would be a beast
