Shalane Flanagan will be the first American to run 10,000 meters under 30 minutes. I suspect 29:57 in 2009. She looked very good in Beijing under quite warm and humid weather.

I really appreciate you guys for providing the coverage but I hope you can do a better job with the camera. You jerked the customer from left to right and you zoomed in and out at light speed. Your coverage is making many people dizzy.

I'll take enthusiasm over order every time
This commentary feels "real"...I occasionally wish they had pace charts to consult on the splits but hey, it's a 10k...we have time to work it out. Go ahead and talk over each other.
( 1 play by play 1 commentator = boring )

One play by play guy and one commentator...everyone can't talk at once.

And oh yeah: Great job on this, guys. It was nice to see this live instead of just waiting for results to come up on a cold stats page.

Wow he said that they were both in the 30:30 to 30:40 fitness range. Not a bad estimation, i'd say!

And darn it, I knew I should have stayed awake and watched this race live. The "American Record" at the beginning spoiled it for me this morning. Well, sort of -- given how steady her pace was, it was pretty obvious by about 6 or 7K what was going to happen.

Thanks, FloTrack for the opportunity to view this historic race.

Minor point...Wasn't the pacer Rose Kosgei?

Your math skills are better than mine, but still: You guys really ought to purchase a Big Gold Book so that you can track pace without doing those gymnastics in your head.

Shalane Flanagan

W 10k Sec 1 American Record

May 4, 2008
Shalane Flanagan set a new American Record LIVE
on FLOTRACK.ORG at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Stanford Invite with a
blistering time of 30:34.49. Kim Smith finished second just step behind with a 30:35.54 and crushed her own New Zealand by 45 seconds. Flanagan and Smith worked together
for most of the race switching back and forth to keep up
the pace. The American Record was in Flanagan's eyes from the start.
Smith and Flanagan broke out to a large lead early in the race that
neither would relinquish. Smith held the lead for the last few laps,
but Shalane clearly had plenty left. Flanagan gave a huge kick with
200m to go and tucked inside Smith to place her name in the USA Track
and Field record books by breaking the previous record set by Deena
Kastor.

Sally Kipyego rounded out 3rd place with a 31:25.45 (Collegiate
Record), followed by Sabrina Mockenhaupt 31:27.05, and Molly Huddle
who finished in 5th place at 31:27.12.
