Jerry Schumacher is a great coach. No doubt. I think for getting Shalane to the top in the 5k and 10k, he may very well be the best coach out there for her (or maybe about equal to Cook..who knows). But has Schumacher ever coached a marathoner? What kind of success has he had in that realm? A runner who has this much potential, I'd think she'd want to choose a coach with a proven track record in the marathon.

Hope for all the best! I know switching coaches can either be a really good thing, or can lead to problems via the transition.
Seems like a lot of the current 10k track stars are flocking to the marathon, and I'm luvin it=)

I am a big fan of Shalane but I do need to correct her:

She says she wants to debut where the trials will be held (most likely in Boston or New York) - except the trials courses are completely different than the regular Boston and New York Marathons. The only things the same are the finish lines.

I think if Shalane can stay healthy then Kara Goucher better be worried about her U.S competition in the marathon forget about the international scene.

Mark - I remember an interview you did at Nike Headquarters where Shalane was at the front desk and you wanted to talk, and she looked at you like you from another planet!

Now! the rapport is just great. I appreciate your work. (And Shalane's massive talent)

Probably not the greatest move in the history of coaching changes. How many star females has Jerry coached. I know he tried with Schwald and Buttry and both of them got much worse. I hope it works but I don't get it.

She will beat Kara's debut marathon with EASE! Yes, I said with ease!!!! Her 10,000 time whips Kara's best and although that doesn't translate exactly to a marathon prediction, she WILL waste Kara. Watch and see, "probably" sometime next year.

That would be insane if she ran marathons! The USA will have Kara, Shalane, Deena. If Shalane is in 30:22 10k shape when she runs her first marathon, she could probably run between 2:19 on a perfect day and a perfect course to probably 2:25-ish.... I'm no expert, just comparing other woman's marathon times and their recent 10k times... All things aside, she is an amazing runner and an inspiration to us all.
